Regular readers know that I have disdain for the French, but no one is happy about the rioting (except Islamo-fascists, of course). Look at the carnage:
I think that this conflict is also being fueled by a deep dislike by the French for their own government's actions over the last few years. While I agree with you that it is primarily a case of militant ethnic factions, I think that as it goes on, more and more dissatisfied French citizens are going to take to the streets for their own agendas and problems.
Compare this to the L.A. riots in the nineties. While they were originaly a race issue (the Rodney King beatings served as a catalyst for their inception), they became a vehicle for people to vent their frustrations with the state or anything else (in the most unproductive way possible). To me, the French riots reek of this. They started out as a focused group with a singular agenda, but have festered into something worse.
