[With all these voices, Xanth can't sleep, but it's alright. He was awake anyway and taking a walk. It's on this walk that he finds Ironhide with a very familiar, unsmashed pumpkin. He feels a surge of hatred toward Deior for doing this to them. How dare he play on their emotions like this.

But Xanth says nothing. He walks up, steps loud so that Ironhide will notice, and then he stands there.

... You get used to hearing someone for so many centuries... hard to remember what it was like before they started nagging you.
