The Gastric brooding frog of Northern Australia was discovered in the last 20 years. Scientists learned that this frog actually swallowed its own eggs, not taking them into its mouth, but actually swallowing them into its stomach, where they developed normally. When the little froglets were ready to disperse, the parent would vomit them up and off they'd go. No one knew how they suppressed their stomach acids to keep from digesting their own young. When interested scientists and pharmaceutical companies (wanting to help the 100's of millions of ulcer sufferers world-wide) went back to the remote habitats of this amazing frog, they were all gone. They are believed extinct and no one knows why.
