Sorry, but I wouldn't touch a book in which the author gives me such detailed descriptions. They are boring.

If "never a dull moment" is a criteria for a thriller novel, then HP might very well fulfill it. I remember I finished Prisoner in Azkaban in less than 24 hours - and I didn't even have to sacrifice my sleeping hours, either. ;)

Detailed descriptions are supposed to give the story more texture, but I agree some writers tend to go overboard with them.

Oh, in the case of Clarke, I've no doubt it's intentional. Not everyone can pull it off and not annoy the reader, though.
