Back to basics

You know what feels great? To sit here, at home, at my computer, with a cup of tea (brewed, not bag), and a piece of chocolate cake, and with today's blog entry to write. I'm right on schedule, too, because it's half past five. It's a bit early for me to be blogging, but I woke up early, and everything in my daily routine has been sliding a bit ( Read more... )

David Copperfield is one of my favourite books. I cannot recommend it enough. I look forward to seeing what you think of it! :)

I'm really liking it so far, but I find that reading Dickens takes a lot of patience. I'm a patient person in other ways, but my reading habits so far haven't required much patience. I will get through it, though.

Yeah, a lot of people seem to find that with Dickens(as an aside, you've probably already mentioned somewhere, but is Finnish your first language and English a second? If so, my utmost respect for reading Dickens at all! I have a Japanese friend doing a PhD here in the UK on 19th-century English literature and I don't know how she does it. My language skills are appalling.) Personally, I love *most* of the stuff I've read of his. I'm about half way through the Pickwick Papers which have me in stitches. I also love Great Expectations and Our Mutual Friend, but I got bored in Nicholas Nickleby (rent the film instead, is my opinion on that one). David Copperfield is definitely my favourite though :)

Thanks for the compliment:). Yes, Finnish is my first language, I learned English at school. It's probably the way with many people with a major world language as their first language, that they don't really need to learn many other languages well. We learn lots of languages in school here, and many Finns know English very well.

I think it's awesome that you can read so many books at once! I certainly can't. :-)

Interesting survey. I really liked your answer for the question about procrastination. I must admit that I'm guilty of it a lot when it comes to medical stuff. Sometimes I find stuff does go away on its own, but I definitely see how it's not something smart.

I don't know that it's so good to read a lot of books at once. Sometimes I get so involved in a book that I don't read any others for a while, but usually I can't keep reading just one book.
About procrastination: I think most people learn from their experiences, and if leaving things to the last moment hasn't had serious consequences, you tend to go on doing it. I used to tell myself that I work well under pressure, but it was an excuse. Nowadays I'm telling other people to get on with it. I still struggle with procrastination, but I'm getting better...

I read Shakespeare about 10 years later. Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet, King Lear, Othello. That's great.

I love Shakespeare, I really do. Reading him takes a lot of effort, and it's a slow business, but it's really worth it. He has such a way with words, and such an understanding of character.
