Honestly, I can understand both extreme feelings of the Bin Laden thing, but I admit as probably as good news as it appears, it feels really weird and awkward for me to celebrate death like that, no matter how evil he was.
Yeah, it's all so mixed up and complicated especially for those of us who remember everything clearly (I can't believe it's been a DECADE). I'm for sure relieved that he's gone--like seriously, fuck that dude--but I hope things don't go too far with the cheering crowds or the xenophobia.
Your feelings are mine. The stuff at ground zero didn't bother me half as much as the stuff outside of the White House, I get it and I'm sure most of the people there didn't mean it to come across the way it did but just felt caught up in the moment so I want to give them the benefit of a doubt but....yeah.
Also remind me to stay the fuck away from tumblr whenever something important happens, jeez.
Yeah I'm keeping in mind that it's really fresh for people still, and I don't have a personal connection to the 9/11 attacks so it's not for me to judge what people need to do for themselves, but some of the jokes and "FUCKYEAH" stuff is still freaking me out because I remember what innocent Americans went through post 9/11 because of misplaced anger against Islam. Really glad the Prez referenced it specifically in his speech, too.
THE INTERNET IS FIRED AFTER LAST NIGHT, BASICALLY.
I hate it. I thought it looked really creepy and propaganda-y with all the "three cheers for America!" hoopla outside of the White House. And to further what you said, this Nationalism shit is ridiculous and scary because it's tied to so much racist bullshit still. And I can't help but think: when will Bush and co. pay for their war crimes? You'll see me screaming from the fucking rafters with nationalistic pride when that day fucking comes.
Uhh...sorry for dumping this on your comment board. To switch gears, tumblr is taking over my LIFE and I barely check lj anymore myself...
Haha I know, it's ridic how little I post to LJ as opposed to tumblr, but I miss LJ, especially when tumblr is being THE WORST.
What's your tumblr handle? I HAVE YOU ON THERE RIGHT? No one's name is the same and my brain fails me sometimes.
Heh, it's strange the different ways people view/express nationalism isn't it? 'cos yeah, if we ever started holding our OWN leaders accountable for their war crimes as well as others, I would start rocking... idk, an American flag tracksuit or something.
I'm with you on the celebrating death thing. I'm glad justice has been done but we still have a long way to go. I'm really happy that President Obama was the one who made this happen. I just had to laugh when my sister told me people over on Facebook were praising Bush on his page for 'staying the course'. People can be so freaking mental!!!! O_O
