I don't really get the paranoia about tumblr, tbh. It's just a pretty spam machine, the format of which can also unfortunately lend itself to epic fail - but if you're savvy about who you follow you can avoid it. Are people just scared there's gonna be some kind of mass migration to tumblr and livejournal will become a wasteland? Cause that's kinda ridiculous. The one suppliments the other - but they don't perform the same functions so they don't tend to replace each other as such. Tumblr, for instance, is NOT a good format for posting fic in - LJ will ALWAYS be more popular for that - as well as length episode discussions and fandom meta; whereas tumblr is better for pretty graphics and the occasional quick snippet of squeeing.

Whatevs - i like both, I'll use both and be happy with both.

That's the thing, I truly get two VERY different things out of each. Tumblr could never really replace LJ because you can't do meta, fic, or discussion in a convenient way. Which pretty much ensures I will NEVER leave LJ, haha.

But I love the aggregation of pretty that tumblr provides, too.

Yeah, pretty much. I go to tumblr for very different things than LJ. LJ provides me with much more of an immediate community, as well - it's much easier to TALK to people on LJ. Tumblr's more of a place where I procrastinate and look at pretty things and occasionally talk in all-caps about how pretty Katie McGrath is. :P

I totally get your stance, there are definitely a solid number of people who use both for different reasons. I am just SO sad and upset that a good amount of my close friends have completely left and they didn't even say GOODBYE, not to mention the fact that I'd come to rely on their thoughts and ideas and I know I'm not alone. And now if I want to know what they think I have to go to their tumblrs and just see a picture, and I can't even reply in a comment! I really do believe in this place as a network of real friendships, and I couldn't just keep watching it without suggesting a method of change.

Oh, also, I think the motivation behind suggesting a month break is twofold: 1) noticing a lot of people constantly saying that tumblr is so addictive they can't motivate themselves to make an lj post 2) thinking that if the people who generate the most original content leave for a while, the place will be exposed as the reblogging frenzy it is, because there will be so much less to just copy.

No totally, I know it must be hard if people have TOTALLY left one for the other. Have you tried talking to these peeps one-on-one to try and reconnect?

Totally. For me, tumblr's definitely distracting/addictive to a point. I find it truly relaxing to open up photoshop and treat screencaps, and for picspams I really enjoy that format. And there are people there who I'd miss who I don't know on LJ. But there's stuff I can't get on tumblr that's also very important to me; fic, discussion, meta, meaningful communication and real friendships, as you said. I'm always able to motivate myself for that if I'm in the mood for it.

But I do understand what you mean in that others might ditch one for the other; I guess I just looked at it more as them finding something that makes them happier or suits their schedule better? I suppose it's just as easy to toss picspams up on LJ, but still.

I have, and this helps a bit but there's also that group discussion aspect of LJ that makes it so wonderful, it's like we're friends as a group and I love everybody constantly feeding off each other and using what other people have to say to inform their own writing. IDK I'm just really hoping (somewhat selfishly) that some of my friends come back because I care so much about themmmmmm and their contribution to the space.

And yeah, I don't want to begrudge someone something that makes them genuinely happy or peaceful but I also just suspect tumblr of enabling LJ ruts, to the point where it's not that someone really does like tumblr better but just that's they've become so accustomed to it that they need some sort of jumpstart to get back here! Not that I'm presuming my effort could be the catalyst, but I just want to try, and feel like I'm doing my best to speak out about something that's making me sad.

*nods* I think my experience has been different from you guys as a huge chunk of my f-list isn't using or is only vaguely aware of tumblr, so I've seen no drop in posts. I guess if I had been I might be feeling the same?

It does suck to completely lose communication with friends though, I know that for sure. :(

Woot for writing! I finally managed to write a couple thousand words on my hermionesmut fic today and am maybe a fourth of the way through. And the deadline isn't until Friday! Tralala, plenty of time! (lol)

One thing I truly appreciate about LJ is its versatility. It's allowed me to stay in touch with people I'd almost certainly have lost sight of otherwise, because even if fannish interests diverge, there are still RL posts or political posts or pretty picspams or even silly memes where we can touch base. I have people on my flist from my X-Files mailing-list days back in 2001, and while we scattered to all winds fandom-wise over half a decade ago, it seems the connection and affection sticks because we have this place to check in once in a while. It still warms my heart to exchange a couple of LJ comments with an old friend even if we haven't communicated for months on end.

I don't know much about tumblr except for occasional random clicking-in, but it looks like a rather different kind of beast. More emphasis on the pretty. :)

Oh you're WAY ahead of schedule compared to my typical exchange fic process. :D Good luck!

That's such a fantastic point re: the versatility. And I absolutely love chatting to someone I might not have spoken to for months - the thread never truly breaks -- or it doesn't have to -- and being reminded of that from time to time is just lovely.

GO THERE WHEN YOU GET A BREAK, IT IS A HAPPY PLACE. I'm sure it'll be open for quite a while anyway! I think A/Gdom needs more kink, so much more. I'm currently browsing for more prompts with which to make myself blush.

And yeah, re: tumblr, most everyone I know over there still posts here, and those who don't -- well, finding a place that's a better fit is a good thing! If we're friends, we'll stay in touch. Tumblr is becoming increasingly fannish, and while it's not the same as LJ in terms of having discussions and posting fic, it's still another way to engage with stuff.

I tried Tumbler but couldn't get into it. Not sure why. I guess I'm just so LJ-focused, because I couldn't really get into Twitter or Dreamwidth or IJ etc. either.

It feels like there's been a lost connection between me and friends recently. It's mostly my fault because I've been so busy in RL and I am dealing with one of the worst cases of writer's block I've had in almost 11 years of fanfic writing, but LJ at least lets me keep up with them even if we don't share fandoms anymore or they never comment on my posts etc.

I miss you! I hope you enjoy your two extra days off and get lots of writing done. I'm going to make yet another attempt at writing later today after I take out trash and do some chores. Sigh.

I think you're a wordier person, and with tumblr it's just hard to communicate. That's why I'll always love LJ. <3

You've had a crazy last few months, though! With the new place, and moving, and stuff happens. We love you. ♥

I know about writers' block. I try to fill the spaces between posting fic by spamming my f-list with inane babble. so far, it's working.
