walkingshadow has produced the most perfect post for my current mood so I am pointing to it so that all may enjoy:

How To Tell If Your Pain is ~Manpain~

(in a tv/fannish context, obvs)

+ Also, yesterday out of curiosity and the fact I am firmly in procrastination-mode, I watched Misfits, that new ~Skins-meets-Heroes~ crossover thing on E4? (I was warned, and ( Read more... )

I actually... didn't hate it. I think it could get better, and it didn't need to be as crude as it was, but it wasn't horrifically bad. It's pretty much a send up of certain parts of UK youth culture. They're caricatures. I actually know people who are tamed down versions of a couple of the characters *shrugs*. The one character I had a problem with was Alisha... because I'm uncomfortable with what her power does. I know too many women who have been raped to be entirely comfortable with anything that makes light of the subject. At the same time I'm kind of hoping that it's going to be... explained maybe. Does that make sense? I watched a few cast interviews a bit back and they actually spoke reasonably intelligently about why they were given their respective powers - they actually did a better job than the show did. The first episode seemed to focus mainly on Kelly and Nathan. The first to set up the first ep and the latter to set up the second.

Yeah, crudeness doesn't bother me (I watch Skins) but it's Alisha's "power" is what bugs me the most - srsly, WORST SUPERPOWER EVER. I don't have a problem with her character herself, it's what they did with her, the message it sends about "girls like her" and the imagery it invoked.

I do understand hoping it'll be explained - I do that with a lot of shows; sticking around until it gets better, etc. Sometimes shows will surprise you.
