I'm avoiding the Star Trek fandom right now. I peruse the newsletter, that's about it. Wow, people. ;_;

I know! I read from recs and the newsletter and that's all. I'm just trying to steer clear of the fail.

I just want to say, in all my years in being a fan or writing and reading for Star Trek and all its incarnations, I have never seen such race wank before. I mean, awhike back there was talk about how cool Sisko was as a POC commander and I always knew about Nichelle Nichols encounter with MLK, which was cool, but never did I hear people fight so much about it.

It seems counter-productive to me, about a show that celebrates diversity, real or imaginary.

Yeah, it's a confluence of a lot of different factors -- because really, in some ways the Uhura wank is the same thing that happens to most female characters in male-dominated casts. Especially women who get between fandom's perceived slash OTPs. The fact that she's a PoC adds another layer to some of the complaints, that's all.

I was so excited leading up to the film when everyone was bouncy about a new generation of Uhura and Sulu and all the others. And right after the film, everything was all shiny and lovely and positive, and now it's just ugly. Uhura being on TOS was all good and positive in everyone's eyes, but now that she's with Spock, all of a sudden there's wank. It's skeevy.
