I would highly recommend all the books in that series -- the second trilogy is just as good as the first, and the latest one Naamah's Kiss was phenomenal. The only books by Carey I would say to avoid are the ones she wrote out of series -- I got one (I can't even remember the title -- Oathbreaker?) was unreadable.

I just got a copy of the HBP score but haven't had a chance to listen yet.

Oh, I think you'll like the score! It's definitely nearly become my favorite one and it's got me well hyped to see the film. *g*

I haven't heard any buzz about the books she wrote out of series so I wasn't as curious about them - for good reason, it looks like. I'll avoid. Looking forward to starting Kushiel's Chosen!

I'm weirdly hyped to see the film too despite the fact that it's my least fave book in the series (to the point of loathing). of course the removal of the Tonks/Remus b.s. might be a big part of why I'll like the movie more...

When she finished the first Kushiel's series, there was a buzz about a new series from her -- but it died pretty quickly. I know she wrote 2 books in the series (not sure if there were supposed to be more), the reviews were awful and like I said, I found the first one pretty unreadable. Unlike the other four (so far) in the on going D'angeline series. The latest one is very different in terms of point of view and location, but still just as fun. (And hey, well written kinky sex is always a good thing!)

Yes, the well-written kinky sex is DEFINITELY a point in its favor. But I like how sex is a big part of the books but the books are still not all ABOUT romance and sex; it just plays an organic part in the story.

I also like the depiction of sexuality as spiritual, without the level of shame that's attached to it in our culture.

Ooh, Kushiel's Dart - I'd highly recommend that series as well. I really enjoyed that trilogy (and well, what books aren't without some flaws?). I admit I'm different from ragdoll above in that I was not a fan at all of her second trilogy; I'd actually started with it first, was bored, and would have given up if somebody hadn't pointed out to me those first three. However I did think that Nammah's Kiss was well done. Everybody obviously has different tastes.

I'm LOVING it. I think true epics about women are pretty rare; they're usually supporting characters to the hero. But this trilogy is one - and it's pretty amazing so far; looking forward to reading the rest.

And yes, everyone's mileage varies. You know, I was reading a review of Namaah's Kiss the other day and it said that while it's not necessary to read the previous two trilogies to know what's going on, it's a bit more difficult to enjoy this new one if you haven't read the others in the verse. Maybe the second trilogy is the same way, if you hadn't read Phedre's books first?

I don't know; but I'm REALLY going to miss Phedre once her books are done.

Just me butting in here -- I really think that if you haven't read the first three books, the next trilogy won't have the same impact as it's a direct sequel and a lot of the players involved are the same. If you don't know who Phaedre is or Joscelin or anyone else (won't spoil you) including the main character, a lot of the emotional impact is lost. The same is true of the third series if you haven't read the second (since a big part of the plot there sets up the third one) But YMMV. :)

He hated it. But it was fun! And his hair's getting longer, it still flops into his eyes even once it dried, which I didn't expect.

Hehe, yeah it's a pretty fast read. Except for the parts you have to read twice...
