Well. Apparently it's National Day of Prayer today. That's apropos of what I was meaning to write about, which is the film Jesus Camp.

If you haven't heard about it, it's a documentary style film about children of Evangelical Christian families, in which we see them being raised Evangelical, going to summer camp to get indoctrinated inspired in ( Read more... )

I often have the same feeling that everything is going to be fine, and that the only reason these folks are so up in arms is that they're losing. I'm not sure it takes much in the way of scale-tipping to set them off, though. Anyone who needs such small boxes to contain hir world is bound to notice a rip or two in the cardboard.

In the way of not-quite-irony, I read your entry and then the next one on my flist, Neil Gaiman's blog. Where he links to this article in a Utah paper. Big with the Oy.

Stars nova before they die. The more they feel like they are loosing the fight, the more they will be willing to do. We already have Planned Parenthood bombings and doctors getting murdered. After the Civil War more black people got lynched than during the slavery era. There are volitile consequences when extreamist get backed into a corner and feel that their way of life is truly threatened.

So "winning" in a culture war still might involve a rather nasty body count.

Yeah, no doubt. I guess when I say "everything is going to be fine" I mean in the long run. In the generational time frame.

Even the volatility that you mention works against them. The more desperate they get, and the more they retreat to severe reactionary ideologies, the more they will alienate the mainstream of the country and the faster they will lose. I'm not doubting that bad things will still come of this, just that I see the ultimate outcome as being pretty much unavoidable at this point.

It just seems to me that there have been a number of historical occations were the vocal and mobilized minority has been able to take and maintain a hold over the majority.

I don't think the majority were in charge of the regime change in Chile, Post WWI Germany, China, the forming of the Soviet Union, etc. Extreamist can hold power over the majority and maintain it.

I wouldn't break out the champagne for this pending victory you foresee just yet. Things could get a LOT worse before that happen, if at all. The Ameriban (as your husband likes to call them) could very easily maintain a strangle hold on this country for a loooong time.

In that Wikipedia article I noticed it says that after the film came out, the reaction of the public was such that the Jesus camp had to shut down. Possibly temporarily, but still. And that's with the filmmakers attempting to be somewhat even-handed in their treatment.
