Even the volatility that you mention works against them. The more desperate they get, and the more they retreat to severe reactionary ideologies, the more they will alienate the mainstream of the country and the faster they will lose. I'm not doubting that bad things will still come of this, just that I see the ultimate outcome as being pretty much unavoidable at this point.

I don't think the majority were in charge of the regime change in Chile, Post WWI Germany, China, the forming of the Soviet Union, etc. Extreamist can hold power over the majority and maintain it.
I wouldn't break out the champagne for this pending victory you foresee just yet. Things could get a LOT worse before that happen, if at all. The Ameriban (as your husband likes to call them) could very easily maintain a strangle hold on this country for a loooong time.
