The idea that someone can survive a long enough life to have a twitter account and NOT know that song WELL is just sad. Lol, I knew the German version before I knew there WAS an english version.
ALTHOUGH my senior year of high school, my economics teacher was awarding bonus points with a 'name the song' day (lol he was bored I think) and most of them were like... 1 to 3 points and yet that song was worth 10 and I was the only one to say it, so Idk...
Maybe I'm just overly aware of pop-culture before my time compared to most people my age?
*horrifying thought, btw* **and the girl I mentioned above didn't know who Tom Hanks was and that's someone DEFINITELY from within her lifetime... and YES I'm pretty sure she knows this song, lol**
WAITTTTTTTT! HOLD UP... There is someone on this PLANET that doesn't know who Tom Hanks is??? Which rock does she live under... There was one point in time you couldn't swing a sack with out hitting a Tom Hanks movie...
I think it's a full on culture!fail in her family/friends too because like... half the things I assume are IMPOSSIBLE to not know, films that are IMPOSSIBLE to not have seen... she doesn't know anybody who HAS!
It's like... shocking but I've gotten used to it. I just assume she has no clue about anybody I mention now, lol. It's fun to see who she does and doesn't recognize.
There were people that have never heard this song??? This makes me so sad... Sad but not surprised... I had people in my feed that didn't know who Tony Bennett was... *facepalm*
The saddest part is, most of these people are MY age! Sure, it's before our time, but REALLY?!
I had one friend who actually said, in response to talking about the music in the 90s, "I was only ever 7 years old at the most in the 90's, why would I know anything about that?" and I was all "DUDE! I was only ever 9 in the 90s and that hasn't stopped me!"
Another friend (seriously, TWO friends with this attitude) said, about 80's films, "I wasn't born yet, why would I have any clue what you're talking about?" and I just facepalmed. I mean... MOST of my favorite movies are 90's films (Some of which I didnt' SEE until the 2000s but still, I WAS alive), BUT there are so many 80's films I ADORE and the idea of 'its from before my time' is just a scary thought to me, lmao.
I can't imagine the entire font of my pop culture knowledge being from the 20 years I've been alive... it's a TRAGIC thought, lmao.
I have seen movies from just about every decade... OMFG... have they seen Gone With The Wind?? Cause if they haven't I will seriously cry... Pop Culture ignorance makes me so sad... I love everything about the 80's... I was born in 81... It is mind boggling that some people have missed out on epicness
Psh, I advise people AGAINST Gone With The Wind (HATED that film so hardcore) but yeah, it's not as much ignorance I don't think as just a multi-faceted breakdown in pop-culture education. It's like... nobody around them exposes it to them, they don't watch 'i love the 90's on VH1 like us SANE people (hehehe), and they just somehow end up with others who don't know things and they NEVER become educated
( ... )
even if i didn't remember hearing this song on the radio as a kid, which i totally do, it's been in about a billion movies. also, i know who bill kaulitz is, and have therefore heard of nena.
Possibly only because of TH. Without TH I'd have no clue who Nena even is. Since I saw her name and the song title when I opened the link though we shall never know if I'd have figured it out. But really, it's not uncommon for people to not know things 'everyone knows' cause the fact of the matter is not everyone actually knows. Things (celebs and music and such) aren't always as popular and known about as they may seem to be.
Sometimes I agree, because recent people I know VERY little about, but it's more the fact that that song is old enough and iconic enough that it seems impossible for someone to have NOT been exposed to it.
I mean, sure, I can understand maybe hearing it and going all 'oh yeah, that song!'
but the ones i'm talking about seemd to have never heard it and that's just shocking, lol.
