She'd barely even started to pray before Chuck seemed to appear, walking to sit beside her, holding out a plate with some Christmas cookies on them and a small smile on his face. "Cookie? The snowball shaped powdered sugar ones are really good."
Okay, so yes... he was trying to placate her with cookies.

She smiled faintly when he held out the plate and tentatively reached out and took one of the snowball shaped cookies. She held it in her hand. "Thanks."
This seemed almost normal if you took away the fact they were in a church.
Anna looked down at the cookie thoughtfully. "I'm sorry I haven't come around, really, since Gabriel left..."
His leaving had been hard on her.

He set the tray of cookies down on the pew beside him, reaching for one. Kerai had been trying to get him to eat healthier along with her, so he'd been keeping sweets at the library.
"And I didn't want to seek you out after he left, because I thought you'd need time." Chuck told her, "He's with Debra, so you know. Happy."
Happy and not dead.

"I'm glad." She chewed on the cookie thoughtfully. "He deserves it, you know?"
