Easter Dinner (Gathering style - tag Winchesters, Harvelles, and Singer)

Apr 24, 2011 13:07

Mary had spent much of Saturday prepping and baking food for Sunday and was up early today to get the rest of the food and decorations ready for dinner. It was Easter and traditionally they had a family dinner that was delicious, yes, but proper size for the three and a half mouths to feed. However, this Easter, Mary cooked like she was feeding an ( Read more... )

After the dinner, which she hoped was a success considering no one had complained much about the food, Mary found herself in the kitchen with a dish towel over her shoulder and a pile of plates to clean up. She wasn't planning on doing it all, certainly, but there were too many to just let them sit on the counter so she decided to do the plates and some cups, at least. That way if anyone wanted more dessert or a drink there would be something to put those things in or on.

She hummed softly to herself. It was strange to have grown boys, but in the end, it was nice to have her family together as they were tonight.

Mary would have said that those were two aspects of John, especially when they just met. He had thought he was charming, but it was his cluelessness that really got to Mary.

"Can I be a typical mom here and ask how you two met? In the village, I'm assuming."

"Yeah, we met here." Ramona still had no clue if they came from the same reality or not. "He came into the bar I work at one night. It was the day before Valentine's Day, there was some big party going on somewhere else, so business was pretty dead. And, I don't know. We talked."

"That's usually when you meet the nice ones. When I was younger I went through a period were I was always actively looking and all I met were jerks."

She looked at Ramona and smiled. "But of course, I'm biased, so take that however you'd like."

"I've met my share of jerks," Ramona admitted with a wry smile. "I think Sam definitely breaks that pattern."

"That's good." Mary realized she couldn't really say if she could say the same for Sam and it caused her to fall silent for a moment as she washed one of the dishes a little longer than she had been before.

Finally she passed it to Ramona with a small smile. "I haven't been here long, but the village seems like a nice place. Certainly a good place to take a little vacation from real life. That, and in Lawerance we didn't have as good of a candy store as we do here."

She followed her last comment up with a wry smile.

Ramona wasn't sure what to say, at first (because what did you say to someone that you know is only going home to die?), so she busied her hands with rinsing and drying while her mind worked to find a sentence to latch on to and keep the conversation going.

"I guess that's what we're all doing," she remarked with a little shrug and a tiny smile of her own. "Whether we want to or not. May as well make the best of it...candy store and all."

Mary had realized after she had spoken that the poor girl was probably placed in an awkward situation and stuck, no less, as she had offered to help clean the dishes.

"Which bar is it that you work at? I used to work at a diner. I don't think I could ever convince my father to let me work at an actual bar." Mary laughed softly.

"It's called In & Out...I guess it's really more of a club than a bar." And Ramona was so not discussing the gay-straight aspect of that particular establishment with her boyfriend's mom. Awk-ward.

"I actually put in my notice, though, since my roommate's mom just took over a bar, and I could use a change of atmosphere. The whole club thing isn't really working out."

"A change of atmosphere is usually a good thing. Don't want to get bored or in a rut. It's tough if you absolutely hate your job." Mary thought back to when she went hunting with her parents. She didn't totally hate it all the time, but it wasn't fun and she hadn't wanted to do it for the rest of her life. Thankfully she had found John.

Mary handed the second-last dish to Ramona and smiled. "I promise I won't come in while your working to make things awkward." She remembered when her own mother would come into the diner and make things awkward. The mother of a boyfriend was probably even weirder.

"I wouldn't mind," Ramona assured her sincerely, rinsing and drying the dish. "I have a pretty high awkwardness threshold most of the time."

She laughed softly. She had never heard of an awkwardness threshold, but she liked the term. Mary would use it, but she didn't think she'd ever find the need to.

"Well, alright." It was nice Ramona wasn't entirely offput by Sam's parents. "Just don't tell John or Dean that. They might take it as a challenge."

After Mary finished washing the last dish, she handed it over to Ramona.

God, that sounded like something Dean would do. And Ramona being stubborn as she was, she'd refuse to let him get to her.

"Duly noted," she replied with a smirk, rinsing off the final plate and giving it a quick rub with the dish towel. "That all of them?"

"Yep." She washed her hands on the towel that was hanging from the lower cupboard handle. Mary smiled with a half wink. "You're now free."

She was joking, of course, but she knew she was older and still 'the mom'. "I think Sam might appreciate you saving him too."

While she loved the family being together and wanted to spend more time with them, she also knew that everyone was still getting used to the idea of John and her, especially, being around. She imagined Sam would appreciate some time to breathe.
