The day had started out nice enough, sunny and blue skies even if the air was crisp. Juliet's mood didn't really follow the weather though, so when she went to work and came back out when her shift at the clinic was over, gray and overcast with a slight chill to the air seemed much better. John was in the kitchenette, making one of the few meals he could reliably pull off, a cold rainy day favorite with his kids.

"Hey Honey," he called when the door opened. "I hope you like tomato soup and grilled cheese."

Juliet swallowed, managing a smile as she took off her white coat and draped it over the arm of the couch.

"Who doesn't?" she asked lightly as she rounded the corner, leaning against the counter. She watched him silently, something she'd been doing a lot the past couple of days, and if it bothered him, he never said so.

He looked over and smiled at her, then flipped the sandwich in the pan.

"I can remember my mom making these for me when I was a kid," he said, "always seemed to make a cold gray day better." He let the sandwich brown on the other side and gave a stir to the soup.

"My mom put toothpicks in them," she said with a faint smile, looking down a little before clearing her throat.
