The heat of the summer meant David had been doing pretty good business at the soda shop. For some people, he'd heard it was nostalgia, for others it was novelty, for others a taste of home. Anouk walked up to the counter and ordered without so much as a hello. "Italian Cream Soda, please. Amaretto." She pulled coins out of her pocket and plunked them on the counter before hopping up on a stool. Once up, she smiled the hello she hadn't said, head propped up with both elbows on the counter.

David gave the girl an answering smile and took the coins, putting them in the cash register. "Coming right up." It was an odd choice for a girl her age, but who was he to question? People came from all different places and worlds, and it was always interesting to see what they might like.

"How is your day going?" he asked her while he measured out the syrup.
