Waffles (OTA, Tag Gaurnere)

Sarah found that she had been working much harder than she needed to since the Lieutenant had left. It was silly, she told herself, as it wasn't like they were lovers in any sense of the word. However, it was rare for Sarah to come by friends easily and she had regarded the paratrooper as quite possibly the closest friend she had ever had. His ( Read more... )

Paratroopers were becoming less and less in the village, though Babe's absence had hit Bill the worst so far out of the lot although he didn't envy them for where they were headed, whether it was to victory day or their deaths... This whole predestined thing really did tend to get on the wiry man's nerves.

Closing a waffle iron, trapping batter between it, he looked up at the sound of the front bell ringing as the door opened and peered across at the semi-busy floor to.. Sarah. They were friends, right? Sarah and Speirs? Maybe more and maybe less, it wasn't his place although a small part of him hoped it was just a friendship.

Wiping his hands on the front the stark white apron folded and tied around his waist, Bill came out from the kitchen, grabbing a laminated menu on his way over to Sarah's booth. "Hey.. Hi Sarah." His brusque Philly-accented voice had always found an edge of softness in itself whenever she was around.. Presenting her with the menu, he offered a small smile.

She noticed him approaching before she actually turned her face to look at him and she smiled gently when he was at her table. The smile was a little reserved, but it was merely her survival instinct. Everything that she knew was telling her that she shouldn't invest in any one else while she was here, especially a soldier. But it seemed hard to keep a stoic face around him, especially since seeing a man cooking was rather rare in Calgary. "It looks as if you've been busy, Sergeant." For Sarah's credit, her smile warmed slightly, despite her hesitation.

"Yeah?" He should've felt awkward and tacky given he was in an apron stained with waffle batter and food grease while she looked a picture in one of her dresses. The slight warming of her smile melted some of his inhibitions away as using his underbite to its full extent, his smile brightened along with hers. "Guess so, people need their breakfast foods, yanno?"

"An' you!" He piped up almost too late, though he had been thinking it from the second she walked in. "You look real good, I like that dress you got on, real pretty, brings out your eyes."

She was not used to getting compliments and she ducked her head, her eyes looking down at the menu she held in her hand. Sarah would never admit it, but her cheeks dusted with rose color and as must as she had tried not to smile, but she did so as well.

She felt silly. She told herself this was no way to act and forced herself to look back up at Bill. "Thank you. I.." She was not sure what she was going to say. She paused. "Sometimes I feel a bit over-dressed, what with the majority of the fashion here in the village."

Jack heard someone entering and, pausing from his dishwashing, peered out into the main dining area. His hairnet and bright yellow rubber gloves gave him a peculiar appearance but he didn't seem to mind.

"Hello, Madam!" he beamed, catching sight of the woman. "Are you here for waffles?"

He looked strange indeed, especially with his hair the way she had never seen it before. He looked like the illustrations in children's books about pirates and adventurers. Sarah's lips formed a polite smile. "I hope so. I fear this is not the right place for cake."

Jack chuckled and sauntered over to the woman, grabbing a notepad and pen as he did so. "Now," he began, "can I inquire as to what type of waffles you are after?"

OOC: Sorry for taking so long. I had to check to see what Jack was allowed to do.

Sarah could not help being a little bit fascinated with the man before her. He was not like anyone else she had met, that was certain. As she took her seat, she regarded him with a fairly curious gaze. "I've never tried any but regular. There are other kinds?"
