Reefer Madness (Tell your Children) [OTA]

The books started showing up first, appearing on the coffee table in the morning and the middle of the day, and he and Maggie had left them there when they couldn't figure out who they belonged to or what to do with them; but then they started cluttering up his night table and his desk, and he finally rounded them all up and filled a shelf on his ( Read more... )

With college not in session for the summer, Ducky had been spending his time walking and enjoying the people in the village. He had noticed the propensity for new places to pop up and wasn't surprised to see a new store. The name looked intriguing to say the least and stepped inside.

"Oh, a fish store." He chuckled at the name and contents. Someone was very clever.

Ricky stood in the middle of the shop, hands on his hips, empty tanks carefully stacked at his feet, and carefully spiked hair a little fuzzy from the constant light brushes of his fingers.

He hadn't even realised he'd left the door open, and was still in the process of turning around, startled, when the man spoke. Ricky let his shoulders relax, and quirked up one of side of his mouth. "Heh," he said. "Yeah. And rocks." He pointed toward one wall, tanks that were mostly pre-assembled and small (nanotanks according to the signs; he had been relieved to see those), filled with rock and coral fragments.

"I will assume that you are the new proprietor or did you stumble upon the new shop the same as I did? Intrigued by the name?" Ducky moved closer to the young man who seemed to be a little dumbstruck.

"Aah," Ricky pulled out the keys that he had shoved back into his pocket after cringingly unlocking the door. "Jesus. Proprietor. I guess." He winced a little. "I'd heard this place did that, y'know? Just dropped things like this --" he waved a hand, gesturing blindly at the store and possibly the entire village, "in your lap. But, shit. Maybe I'll find someone else who wants this place."

He raised an eyebrow half questioning, half joking, and offered out the keys.

Giselle always liked to investigate the new shops.

She wasn't quite positive what 'Reefer' meant, but the word 'Madness' was clearer. Was something crazy in there? She had to go in and find out!

Once inside, her eyes grew wide as she looked around. She'd never seen anything like it before! Slowly she walked up to one of the fish tanks, running a finger along it's surface and giggling as one of the fish swam toward it.

"Aren't you a darling little fish!" She exclaimed, attention drawn solely to the fish tank's contents.

Whoa, there was a chick in a princess dress talking to a fish. Well, there were a lot of fish in the shop; but only one of her. That outfit - hair, dress, demeanor - was ... unique.

"I think that's the most sociable I've seen any of them today," Ricky said, arms wrapped around a box full of various fake plants he'd found, stacked on top of a box of freeze dried bloodworms. The shop was still a bit, well. Disorganized would be a nice word for it.

Giselle generally talked to any animal she came across. Now, she didn't always get a response, and since she had never spoken with a fish before in Andalasia, she didn't expect one now.

A voice drew her away from watching bubbles float from the fishes' mouth. "Hi! This is an interesting store you have. I've never seen fish kept in anything other than a pond."

As long as you don't make the fish sing and dance, Giselle. He's not quite ready for that. ... He'll probably never be ready for that.

"Yeah? Heh. Growing up, only time I ever saw fish were in bowls, or on the plate. Not that you'd want to eat these ones -- they're bowl fish. Pets. Nonfuzzy pets that don't need to go for walks."
