A Ground Rule or Two
For once, Rachel is at loss for what she could say to Mike to make him smile. The crestfallen expression that appeared on his face tugged at her heartstrings. She wished she could take everything back but she could not. Her fathers’ had their hearts set on a family trip to California for months now, and while she just wanted to tell them she wanted to stay home instead; a family trip meant so much for them. She never thought telling her boyfriend of three months that she would be gone all summer break would be this hard.
“I’ll be back before you know it, Michael,” she rested her small hand on his arm gently rubbing it as he nodded.

As Mike’s best friend, Puck noticed a lot of things about his Asian brother. Like how the week that Berry had left for Cali, Mike was beyond moppy. The love sick fool walked around aimlessly, Puck had to pull him aside more than once so he wouldn’t bump into anyone at the mall, with this sissy expression on his face. If he didn’t know any better, he would have thought Berry dumped his Asian ass instead of just leaving the state for a few months.
The only time Chang even attempted to smile were the night Berry called. It once happened when they were having a guy’s night and he just wanted to gag himself with all the mushy shit coming from Mike’s mouth. When the call ended, Chang just sighed and that heartbroken expression just popped up again.
“Dude, you need to get over it,” the guy’s all turned to him. He shook his head, “Berry’s only gone for a few months. It won’t be long until she’s back and the two of you are right back acting out some sickly sweet soap opera.”
He always told it like how it is, so he wasn’t even bothered when Mike glared at him. Puck just shrugged as if it was nothing and returned to the game they were playing.
Tried of the zombie that seemed to have taken over Chang’s body, Puck suggested that Mike test the waters of some other fish. He was amused to no end when midget-diva had called and given him an earful for the suggestion.
It was at Brittany’s pool party that things started to look up. Santana stood beside him as he watched the normally lively dancer kick slowly at the water.
“What the hell’s up with Chang?”
Puck sighed, “He’s going through Berry withdrawal,” when she scrunched up her nose he couldn’t help but add, “don’t really blame the guy. Berry’s smoking.”
She growled under her breath and approached the boy, pushing him into the water. When Mike popped back up out of the water, cursing the Latina she smirked and waved her fingers, “Get over it other Asian.” She flipped her hair over her shoulder and disappeared before Chang could reply.
Puck’s phone vibrated from in his swim trucks, “’Ello?”
“How is he?”
He shook his head as he watched Mike trudged around the pool, “He’s gone Rach,” she sighed and the line went dead, “yeah, bye to you too Berry.”
Snapping the phone shut, Puck walked to the edge of the pool and sat down.
Two Hours later, the two teens were still at poolside when they heard the squeals of excitement from Brittany’s house. Mike made no attempt to move from his spot, so Puck offered to check it out and report back. He hadn’t even fully stepped inside until a small body crashed into his.
“Thank you for watching him for me,” Rachel kissed him on the cheek and hurried out the door to her boyfriend.
He moved next to Santana, his arm wrapping around her waist as they watched the couple, “Thank god.” she mumbled.

Mike kicked at the water and sighed. He was going insane. Things weren’t the same with Rachel missing. She was the pip in his step. Man, he didn’t even feel like dancing with her gone.
And than he was feeling her arms wrapping around him from behind as she whispered his name in ears.
“Michael, I’ve missed you so much!”
He turned and pulled her as humanly close as possible, already feeling hundred times better. He buried his face in her hair and enjoyed the smell of her. She always did live up to her last name.
“I missed you too, Rach,” he stood a little straighter and looked in her eyes and the smile that reached her ears, “but what happened to Cali?”
She smiled sheepishly, “I had been so lost without you that Dad and Daddy bought me a ticket home. I didn’t tell anyone about it because I had wanted it to be a surprise.”
He laughed, kissing the tip of her nose, “a great surprise.”
Rachel nodded her head, “Yes and my Dad’s promised that next year you will be joining us.”
“Best idea ever,” he grinned, hugging her close. The fact that she believed they would still be together next year was beyond epic.
