The Abduction from the Seraglio (OTA)

Sep 20, 2014 18:14

It is here: Opening night for my first official production as director of the opera: Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio. The fact that it's my second production already doesn't make any me less nervous, though I know we've put together a good show.

I'm very happy with young Paris' (parisprincetroy) performance as Belmonte and Faramir (faramir_hurin) is a fine Bassa ( Read more... )

I'm very nervous, even if my role is not a singing one. There are a few who find that strange, myself included. My voice is just not right for any of these roles and I'm sure I'd be even more worried if I had to sing. As it is, my costume is very fancy and not at all like court wear. Well, it's robes. Even stranger, I'm playing a villain. He does right at the end, but it's a new thing for me. At least I know that Glaurnaneth won't think I look like a fool.

I didn't make any terrible mistakes and I think I even had fun in there, once I got over the nerves. Now I should try to eat something.

The Dragon, though confused by the language (why can't all humans just talk the same? she wondered), nevertheless reads the acted gestures and expressions well enough to get the basic gist of the performance.

The moment Faramir emerges into the party, Glaurnaneth makes her way to his side. "That was wonderful, Minmir..."

"Thank you. I enjoyed doing it, once I was over being nervous."

I have to ask.

"Did I make a good bad man?" I tried very hard to be as wicked as I could.

"No," she says honestly. "You let them go."

Her part in the chorus wasn't glamorous, but the cyborg isn't after glamour. She's doing this because she can. The friends she earned in the chorus are a delight to her, and they all seem (to her) to support one another well.

Post-performance, Kilrenko enters the party in a gemstone-encrusted black dress, looking for Caprica, Clayton or her other friends.

"You're literally sparkling," I jokingly note when I spot Moira approaching. In that dress you'd easily mistake her for the star of the show.

Kilrenko smiles to him, her eyelashes sweeping downward. "You're too kind... or were you talking about the dress?"

Her gaze flicks back up and her smile widens. "Congratulations on another successful opera."

That makes me smirk a little. "Oh, both, I suppose." I turn to face her directly, not half over my shoulder. "And congratulations on your successful debut. I hope you enjoyed the experience?"

Mag, though she couldn't perform in public, could at least enjoy opera as a member of the audience.

After the opera ended, Mag moved through the reception crowd with the grace and manners of royalty, looking for the director.

Now who is this woman? I don't think I've seen her before, but certainly have seen women like her at the opera back home. She seems to be looking for someone or something. Lost sight of her husband, maybe? I take a step closer.

"Good evening," I greet her. "Are you looking for someone?"

Mag smiled to him at the greeting. "I was looking for you, if you are the director of tonight's performance."

"Of tonight's performance and the opera as such." I return her smile. "Clayton Webb," I introduce myself with the hint of a bow, hoping she'll reciprocate.

Loki, looking like the cat who'd caught the canary, walked into the reception with Lana Lang. Her hand tucked into the crook of his elbow.

Unlike his usual look, this night he was dressed in a suit and tie.

Lana was dressed in a beautiful long green gown with black lace edging. She smiled up at Loki as he walked her in. "Thank you for inviting me."

"Thank you for coming," Loki returned. He gave her a smile as his eyes roamed over her dress. "You surpassed my expectations with your dress, my dear."

Lana blushed a little. She knew people considered her beautiful and she felt she'd done a particularly good job getting ready for the evening, but it was still nice to hear. "You look especially handsome, yourself," she said with a smile.

Catherine was so proud of Clayton and how well the opera performance had turned out. She was dressed in a green silk and lace dress, that she thought would fit in the time between summer and fall. Her hand reached for a drink as she mingled around those gathered to give her congratulations.

Now that's the loveliest sight I've seen all day! I spot Catherine moving around and sneak up on her from behind as she slows to take a glass off a tray. And - elated as I am - I dare to sneak my arm around her waist.

"I already knew you have a good taste when it comes to clothing, but I'm happy to see it proved again. You look stunning, Catherine."

Catherine ducked her head in a small bow. "Why thank you. You look quite handsome yourself. Congratulations on the productions. You herded cats very well." Her nose crinkled with her smile.

"If I'm so good at that, maybe I should put Cats on next," I retort. Only it's no opera.

"And thank you." For both compliments.
