Auditions at the Opera [OTA]

May 10, 2014 22:25

Saturday finds me back at the opera house after a couple of days off. I'm more confident about putting on a production now that I know Holmes definitely couldn't care less, hence the open announcement of the auditions. It has been some time since I stood on a stage, and longer since I've stood on this one, but I do remember and don't feel uncomfortable.

"I am Faramir of Gondor," I begin, not knowing this man by sight. "I contacted you and did decide to audition."

I smile.

"The baritone." If he doesn't remember.

"Yes. I couldn't learn the language this way, but I don't need to do that--just enough to know what everyone is saying." Or singing. I'm not sure how it works with some people only talking and the rest singing.

"We'll go over the whole opera with the full cast anyway so everyone knows what's happening when. And you're right, you don't need to learn the language and speak it actively, you've got your lines written down for you and we'll make sure you know what they mean."

I smile. "To cut it short - if you want it, the role is yours."

"Yes, I want it. I'd not have wasted your time if I didn't." Not that it was wasting time to audition, since I did get the role. "I've never been a villain before: I'm rather looking forward to it."

I'm told it's more interesting playing 'the bad guy'. I'll see for myself, though the Pasha redeems himself in the end.

I can't quite suppress my smirk. Yes, playing 'the bad guy' can be interesting. Though I've never done it on stage, I've had to on other occasions.

"Good. Welcome to the opera! We'll meet for the first time on Friday 23rd. That's when we'll go over everything, make sure everyone knows what their characters are doing, what's happening." Can't start too soon, I have some preparations to make, translations and such.

I nod.

"Thank you," I say before bowing and leaving the stage. No need to waste his time now.
