No career path was ever easy, she was told, and a few months of joining the clinic staff as a nurse in training, Anna could believe that. Weekend night shifts were the worst in her opinion, not just for the long hours but sometimes it was rather depressing to see the more sicker patients try to catch sleep when they couldn't. There was also the ( Read more... )

I am checking things on the desk computer, something I always do slowly, when a familiar face comes in to the library. I turn and give her a smile. It would be a respite if she needed help.

Carrie places the books on the table, almost embarrassed.

"Here.." The books are the first three of the Harry Potter series. "Accidentally kept them a few days over due."

May as well tell him, it would've been on her account anyway.

Seeing the book titles makes me smile. I wonder if I should read the last one, perhaps re-read the others first.

"Well, it was an accident, like you said." People don't usually return books late on purpose. "Would you like to pay the fines now or wait? You can still check books out if you wait."

I have no idea if there's a limit on fines. No one has ever been banned from checking books out.

"Now, before I forget." It was only a few dollars anyway. The only reason she forgot was getting the dates mixed up.

She pulled a few singles from her wallet, noticing and recognizing the expression in his face. "You've read these?"

That helped her feel a little better. She was told that adults have read the series too, but it seemed more real to actually know one that's read them rather than just being told.

I'm not sure how to answer her question, besides the obvious.

"Yes. I've read the first six. The seventh was not available then." It was some time ago. I read them because of Sirius but there's no need to say that. That Sirius was on an island, not in the village.

I'm pulling up her account and give the total for the fines.

"Not much at all."

Perhaps I shouldn't ask...

"Did you make Kerai's dress for her wedding?" I believe I heard that.

She gave him the money. It wasn't much now, but it would've added up had she not taken care of it, and she could think of much better things to waste her money on than library fines.

"I did. She came in specifically requesting that I sew it for her, even had the reference image for it." Still not the most traditional of dresses, but it was her choice and Carrie could see nothing wrong with it.

"I wasn't sure about the series, but I plan on getting the next two books after this." It surprised her, liking a children's book series, but the idea of a boy finding out he had powers and wasn't just an orphan was an uplifting story to her.

"It was well done. The dress was perfect for Kerai." It's not far back to remember. "I've been to several weddings here that were so perfect for the people getting married. I wish that mine could be so."

Kerai and Chuck, and Robin and Marian--their wedding was wonderful out in the green woods.

"If you enjoy them, there's no reason not to keep on. If you find yourself losing interest, you can always come back later." They were interesting, though I wouldn't have thought to read them if not for Sirius.

"Thank you. It was the first time I've actually worked on a wedding dress." Well, not exactly 'a' wedding dress, but it was a dress and she wore it for her wedding, so that was the main thing.

She smiled a little. "I plan on it. Though I don't think I'll loose interest if the other stories are anything to go by."

"I read all the ones I could find, so I suppose I'm recommending them." Though she obviously came to them another way.

"Was there anything else you were looking for? I'm sure you can find the Harry Potter books on your own."

She thought a moment. She'd only begun reading for pleasure, but maybe..

It had been a long while.

"Do you know any sort of books I could use for the college? It would've been over two years since I went to school and I don't want to be that much behind."

Granted, it was of her own will that she stayed away, but even so-some 'catch up' reading couldn't hurt.

"Good for you, going to college. I've never been to an actual school." There would be no need for me to try college here, though maybe one class?

"What will you be studying? Do you know what classes you will start taking?"

"I skipped my senior year of high school. Now it just seems silly to go just for one more year." One year than to finish it.

She wondered about him not going to a regular school, but then his dress wasn't like home or modern. Maybe he didn't have to go to school-it was almost enough for her to feel envious.

Almost.

"Some classes in computers, psychology." The two maybe didn't relate, but she wanted to not feel like a novice around electronics..and she wanted to know what went on in her mother's head. In everyone's head.

"I don't know how much you already know about computers, but there is a very basic book about them." I smile. "I read it, having nothing like computers in Gondor. I can do many simple things now."

Nothing like what's needed, but I get by.

"There is a section on psychology that you can look through. I'll look up the number and you can browse those to see where you want to start." I've read some, but not much.

The number is easy enough to get. I also look up the computer book.

"I can leave the desk for a bit, if you're ready. We'll get the computer one first then I'll leave you in peace to look."

"I'm from the 1970s," She answered. "The only mention of computers is in science fiction movies."

She did recall hearing some things about Gondor. Not enough to pique her curiosity, but enough to fill her even more on the place.

She gave a slight nod at his advice. "Okay." It might help if she wasn't a total novice.

When we get to the correct shelves, I pull out the Computers for Dummies book.

"Please do not let the name of it deter you. Apparently there are many of these books on a number of different subjects. I'm not implying that you're any sort of fool." I sigh. "It just means that it starts at the beginning and is simple to follow."

I'll carry it for now, as we go to the psychology section.
