My ranger clothing from home is freshly washed, the boots and leather doublet as clean as they can be--just like at Boromir's wedding. Still, they are plain, every day clothes with only the silver on the embossed White Tree of the doublet being 'fancy'. I feel comfortable in it. I have also made and brought a small, plain white flag. I'll be making a wall banner, solid white, as a wedding gift. They need not put it up, but I do mean to treat Kerai as a sister, and so she can now fly the Hurin banner.

Admittedly, I was somewhat surprised to see who was officiating the ceremony. He asked me to call him Erik, so I will until I am told differently.

Penny and I came together*, though she knows that I'll be standing up at the ceremony. All told, I feel it is a fine day.

I glance in Erik's direction.

"I find no fear there. I don't know if I might have, once. Now I do not. Just a familiar sense." She would know more than I--her Weave knows so much. "Not just humans. Mortals. I do not know about immortals. Perhaps they would not understand him at all."

"I don't understand those mortals who would seek immortality -- we're not built for it, we'd lose our humanity. But at the same time, I can understand those who, at the end, pray for just one more day."

"Immortals are made for it. We are not." I would not wish to live forever.

"Though Men of Numenor once had a gift. Perhaps some of us have it still." Perhaps. "They lived a very long time, but when the end came near they would know and could choose to die when they wished. Most often they would gather family and friends so they could say their farewells first. I would not mind that at all."

It seems a peaceful and logical way to go, both at once.

"I'll be wanting to see Boromir again, and I'll only be able to do that after death. One more day... that is not so long."

"It's understandable to want one more day, and one more day after that, and yet another after that...I suppose that's where the danger lies. I would like to meet your brother, and see your father again. Some day. Perhaps, it will be possible."

"I like to think it will be. We do not know what happens after death." I smile somewhat wryly. "Real death, not temporary."

I'd rather have it be real than that again, though it was enlightening, if unpleasant.

"I'm sure that being worlds away does not mean I won't see Boromir again, so why should I not see you and yours also?" We may well, and that is a joyous thing.

"We may very well, and it will be a happy thing; I think I have many other things to see first." She smiled, and put her hand on her belly.

"Only after many years of joy with your family in this life can you move on to the next adventure," I agree.

"Have you eaten? I know that Boromir was not much for food on his wedding day, but you have more than yourself to look out for." Did I nag ask her already? I forget in all the excitement.

She came the closest to giggling she ever had, and probably ever would, with her breathless chuckle.

"I have tasted things, but I'm not over hungry, it's true. I'll probably feel it when the excitement wears off, and eat heartily of the leftovers then. Have you eaten?"

"I haven't, not yet." I only had a small drink. "I know I must, because it looks good. I like pineapple, so it would be very wrong of me not to try that cake."

I do have pineapple sometimes, but it's not the same as the fresh from the island.

"Come then. I'll have another bite or two if you will." Kerai began to lead him toward the table.

"I had a piece of such a pineapple cake at the cafe once, on a whim, and it was the best thing I'd ever tasted. So, though it's not the sort of cake favored by the dominant local tradition, I knew it was what I wanted."

"We should have that then. I enjoy pineapple very much but I've never had cake with it." It may well end up being a favourite for me too. "I like fruit in pie, and I've gotten used to the fact that pie is generally filled with fruit for modern people."

It took time, but it no longer seems strange as it once did.

"I like pineapple a lot. I'm going to miss it when I go home."
