I'm at the village guard meeting, as I should be. I'm not certain if things are going to be rearranged or not. No matter what else happens, if I'm still in charge of a unit I want to have us train in the holosuite. I have the program ready.
I see Yuri and her cat, so at least part of the unit is here.
Fili was slightly put out that there wasn't food or drink in the plush cozy confines of the lavish ballroom.. Wasn't it customary, after all?
Plunging into the sea of taller people, Fili missed quite a few elbowings in the process, most likely due to his purposeful self-assured stride. Still wearing his favored leathers from home, twin swords strapped to his back, he found himself looking up at someone who just might've been his unit leader, Faramir, though he had yet to meet the man (although Eowyn had spoken of him a few times during her stay.)
"Are you Lord Faramir?" Fili asked the man plainly, Dwarven pride both ancestral and royal, ever present.
I'm not too surprised to be greeted, although vastly so to be greeted by a Dwarf--not Kili.
"I am Captain Lord Faramir of Gondor, yes," I return formally. There's a familiar look to this Dwarf, and there's only one other I've met. "Did Kili mention me?"
I suppose I'm not that hard to pick out in this group, though I'm not the only one with sword and bow.
Eowyn had spoken of the man and it seemed like his younger brother had met him as well. Small world, that.
Gondor rang a distant bell of familiarity but in all honesty, Fili hadn't been away from the Blue Mountains since before journeying to Bag End.
"No, my brother made no mention of you, Faramir of Gondor. You're to be my unit leader in this militia." Then he added, "My friend Lady Eowyn spoke fondly of you while she was here."
"So you are Lord Fili, then," I say with a nod. "I was saddened to hear that Lady Eowyn left. We did not spend enough time together."
Well, we will later on in life.
"Did they just happen to put you in my unit or did they know that we're both from Middle-earth? Not that it matters, as we all have a variety of weapons and fighting styles--by design." The only group that all fights 'the same' is the sharpshooters.
It surprised Fili that Faramir knew his name already.. The man could give Gandalf a run for his money in such mental wizardry.
Broad shoulders shrugging at the question, Fili took a long look around the room, at least what he could see from his undersized vantage point. "Variety of skills, seems like..." He drifted off thoughtfully. "Is there a burglar?"
"Each group has a mixture of skills to better be able to fight whatever we come up against. If one method does not work, then there is someone near who can try something else." I think a moment. "We might be the only unit that has people capable of flying."
The ladies have technology for that.
"Burglar? No, we have no burglar." I'm puzzled for a moment until I remember his story. "We're not really on a quest."
The flying bit was set aside for later, though he hoped that the ladies weren't dragons, maybe they were eagles?
"All reputable outfits have a burglar." Fili replied in kind, remembering Bilbo Baggins. "I'm surprised you don't have a burglar in yours." He added with a light shrug. "Who else could burgle but a burglar?"
"We do not have a burglar because we're only a temporary unit, together when the village has its times of trouble." We are not burgling anything. "So we need only varied fighting skills, perhaps even some with magic."
We don't have that.
"We have sword fighters and I use a bow. Faith uses hand-held weapons. Robert uses a lance and gun and the ladies use various things, including guns." No burglar.
Fili could've counted on both of his sturdy hands the uses a burglar would have, even in a temporary unit.. But maybe it was just him missing the prissy Hobbit.
"I believe I've seen these so-called guns before." He squinted, remembering George Luz of the Island of Rhode's stick strapped to his back. "But I've yet to see on in action."
"If you wish to see people shooting guns, you can go to the firing range. They are very loud." I do not like them and have never shot one. I've been shot twice.
"I'm hoping to set up a training session for our group soon, and you can see how they work then. It will be in something called the holosuite, where I have it set up to look like we'll be fighting enemies from Middle-earth." Even if it's really the computer. "I do not know how to explain it to you.
"If you can let me know soon what times you'll be available I can schedule it."
"I am available after six in the evening, until Joslire tells me otherwise." H was fairly certain he'd go check out this so-called firing range, though he failed to see what fire had to do with it.
Taking the news of the Holosuite in stride (there was a lot of that sort of thing ever since he had arrived in the Land of Haurvatat), Fili simply nodded. "I look forward your Hollow sweet, Faramir."
"I should not be surprised that you work in the forge." I'm not sure if I should say anything, but it might be best. "There is an Elf here, from long before either of our times. He's a jewelsmith who sometimes works at the forge."
I bite my lip, not something I usually do.
"I don't know if you've seen him, but I thought it prudent to let you know." I attempt a smile. "We'll be fighting in the holosuite, not in the forge."
Dwarves, for the most part, did work in forges and on anvils, so Faramir's reply didn't surprise him one bit. The mention of an Elf was slightly shocking; though he didn't share Thorin's burning hatred for them, Fili wasn't about to offer up a pint or a friendly tale to one.
Nodding gravely, Fili offered the man a slight smile, feeling the need for a pint and something substantial to eat. "You'll let me know of a date and time then." He bowed slightly.
"I will. Have you any other questions as this time?" The room is crowded and things are confusing, but we're together and it's a good time for him to ask.
Fili shook his head. "I have none." Aside from the bit about there being no burglar, but that had already been flogged to death. "Good-bye, Lord Faramir.." Fili concluded.
Turning, Fili disappeared into the crowd of tall folk, no doubt off to find some sort of a drink or food which he hadn't seen thus far and he was still put off about it.
