"Hey, Laila," Peeta called, coming from his day's work at the bakery. He gave Laura a smile before concentrating on the girl, crouching down with effort and a grunt. He smiled at the girl. He could at least offer a short reprieve?
"I wanted it!" she says, as if that explains everything. To a two year old it does, anyway.
"How was the bakery today, Peeta?" Laura asks. "Not too busy, I hope." She hardly ever takes a day off and doesn't open. There has been gentle urging by Joslire to do so.
"Everything's fine," he told her, smiling. She deserved more days off. "I've started on Raven's cake." Then he turned to Laila. "But you didn't come see me," he told the girl, teasing. "You wanted soup rather than to come see me?"
Peeta gave Laura the date and gently caught Laila's hand in his, those tiny fingers. It made him think of Quill and Madge, still, but happily. "You're seeing me now. That's great, huh?"
Laila rattles off a list that includes their horn, the fact that they're white, and apparently magic.
"We watched a movie last week, and there was a little girl who loved unicorns, too. So I know what someone's getting for her birthday soon," Laura smirks.
Laura laughs too. "Gods, I've seen that muppet movie so many times I could probably star in the one woman show. And then, you're glad for a second that she's switched movies until you realize she's trying to break some kind of record for most times watched."
Chuckling a little, Peeta came closer, "well, maybe," he offered. "You can come over to Katniss's and my room one night, huh? And we can all watch it?"
You might as well have just told Laila that she could eat candy until her brain exploded. She bounces in Peeta's arms, and Laura looks at her with one eyebrow up, and she knows what that means.
"Peeeeeeeas?"
Laura laughs, she can't help it. "Only on a day that's good for you, Peeta."

Laila hugs him, then grins from her new perch, and Laura could swear it was smug.

"I come see now!" she declares. That makes up for it, right?
"When is their wedding?" she asks, knowing it's next month, but unable to remember when, exactly.

"Laila, tell Peeta what else you like. Your favorite animal."
"Unicorn!" comes the eager reply.
