Jonah definitely didn't have a comfortable village in mind when plotting where in time the island would send him next. He's been jumping through time, has seen the plane crash that brought his father to the island; has looked into the eyes of the man who held his mother there for years. She'd always made him promise he wouldn't go, ever. But when Hugo Reyes came back into their lives, well. He couldn't resist. There were things said about time lines and realities shifting, but the bottom line was, Jonah had the chance to go with someone his mother trusted.
She'd said yes, reluctantly and through plenty of tears. Then he'd gone to Portland, gotten on a submarine, and taken a trip his mother only had the chance to make once.
He never knew that she died, because she was alive and fine back home in New York with his dad - not James, but the man who raised him. John McClane. That's what Hurley had meant when he'd started talking about realities and alternate time lines. Jonah'd studied physics in college (started when he was seventeen), but he never expected to actually apply the theories he'd learned and hashed out. When he finds out how the island works he asks to go back, to learn and understand. Ben - a man who introduced himself by saying he was so sorry - accompanied him after ample warning that he was a different man then. That made Jonah wary enough. And then he found out the entire story.
Rather than kill the man, he made him blend in during the 70s, just for the chance for Jonah to know his father. He joined DHARMA, worked as a handyman. Watched everything go to hell, but before he saw everything, it was time to go.
In the middle of the jungle, squatting and listening to his father go on about shooting a polar bear, Jonah gets up to go, turns around and finds himself in a village. Frowning, he takes off his backpack and pulls out a notebook, flipping through the pages. He'd had his mother write the name of a location once.
Haurvatat. The place he was born, where his mom and dad - John - fell in love. And now, somehow, he was here. Hot, sweating, and looking very much like he's been marching through the jungle.
