Inara's really not sure why she sent a message to Mal. Or a candy gram. All that she knows for sure is that she can't punish him now for things he hasn't done yet. It isn't fair, no matter how she feels about it. And, as always in their relationship, she's being the bigger person

Inara can't think of a reason to say no, not really. She can't even blame work, as it's a temple. Without the safety net of other crew, she can't even begin to imagine how conversation might go.

"...Okay. Just let me blow out the candles and lock the garden doors."

Stalling for time, mostly, trying to understand why now, after years, he's asking her to dinner alone. She does blow out the candles though, and picks up her wrap to go around her bare arms.
