Telling stories to anyone who will listen [ota]

Varric was in good spirits. Of course he was, he had an audience! He stood up in his chair in the hotel lobby as the group of NPC children and other various adults listening with clear enjoyment as he told the story of the Champion of Kirkwall. He put in more than a few embellishments when it came to himself, not that he'd ever admit to it. What? ( Read more... )

"You're really good."

Kyla had been drawn by the crowd at first and then fascinated at how short the man was second. It wasn't like they didn't have little people back home, but they were rare. As the story continued, Kyla found herself drawn into the actual story. There were story tellers sometimes at compounds she visited. Some of them were good. As a kid, stories were told to teach lessons too, like why dogs are important or what to do when you're lost. She had to wonder how much of the story was true.

She stood there now as the crowd dispersed. Kyla was framed by a dog on either side of her, but both of them were sitting as if they, too, had stopped to listen to the man's tale.

He smiled at her, looking particularly smug at the compliment, "Thank you, my dear. I thought I was quite good too."

But then he had rather high opinion of himself.

Her smile turned into a smirk at his attitude. She wasn't necessarily turned off by it rather than it was familiar to home and reminded her a little of Mark.

"If I asked if all of what you said was true, would you tell me the truth?"

"Well now, anything I say now won't give you an answer to that, will it? If I said yes, perhaps I'm lying about that too." he laughed, lightly.

She laughed with him. "Well, if you had looked completely offended, I would have known right away." People who prided themselves on the complete truth usually did.

"But then, it wouldn't be a good story if there wasn't an embellishment or two."

"Embellishments, yes." he admitted to her, "But the majority is truth."

Kyla could appreciate that. "Hawke sounds like brave person." She sort of wanted to meet everyone in his story.

[[ooc: guh! it's so hard to be vague about Hawke's gender XD ]]

He nodded with a nostalgic look in his eye, "The Champion is one of a kind, it's true."

"How did they get that name? Champion of what, exactly?" It was easy enough to tell that at least the man was telling the truth about knowing Hawke and from what Kyla could see, the man was a fighter.

(ooc: I know! lol As a mod, I would say if all the canonmates agree on a gender, you guys could all just go with that >.>)

"By winning many battles and gaining great influence in Kirkwall. By traversing the Deep Roads and coming back alive with treasures beyond imagining. And, of course, by saving the city multiple times...."

"I guess that qualifies." She couldn't help but smile just a little. He spoke about Hawke like she heard others talk about her father. She remembered hearing a story once that had John Connor taking down ten terminators with his bare hands. It wasn't true, of course, but that was the way people felt about him - that he could win against any fight with the machines. She wondered if Hawke carried the burden as heavily as her father did.

Her smile softened a little to something more sincere. "It's clear your respect if very high for your friend."

"It certainly is. Hawke is a true friend. Helped me through much and I have in return as well." he smiled thinking of his friend, "Been through a lot together."

The way he spoke made Kyla miss her squad. For the briefest of moments it graced her eyes, but it was quickly quelled. Besides, it was easier here now with the people she had met.

"I guess she's not here, then."

(ooc: I said she cause I am a stalker >.>)

[[ooc: lol XD ]]

"No, she's not. I think she'd like it here though. The chance to relax for more than five seconds and not everyone looking to her for all the answers."

"And yet she'd still probably feel like she needed to answer people and do something." Hawke sounded more and more like her dad. Maybe all worlds had someone like that or something.

"You're probably right." Varric laughed, "Wouldn't know what to do with herself."
