That anniversary (Open)

Jan 03, 2012 15:08

It has been five years since I died. Was killed. I was remarkably at peace about it last year and even more so today. I do not feel like brooding about it, not with how things are going here. I worked this morning and I have a book to just read here in the hotel lobby. Tonight I am going to supper with my father--he wished to do this and I'm ( Read more... )

"I know you!" came the nasaly cry from the area of the elevators. Then appeared Felecia in her Venus outfit, complete with black boots and coiffed hair. No wig this time, but who needed it when she looked so good?

"And how are you?" she asked, plopping down right next to Faramir, knee to knee. "How was your Christmas? I heard from Draco, by the way. We're going to have a drink or something. You look handsome!" Complete with a squeeze to Faramir's knee.

I look up at the call. Yes, it was to me and I cannot help but smile.

"I know you also, which is a good thing. I'd be rather more uncomfortable if someone I did not know was so familiar." I am uncomfortable, but not overly so. Some people are just more exuberant than others.

"Christmas itself was quiet, as I don't actually celebrate it. Still, there were gifts given and received." Which shouldn't surprise me--I give them, too.

"Did you meet Draco at the party or at one of his places of work?" I know very well that Adam was at the party and with whom. I'm not sure if I should warn Adam or laugh about it later.

"I haven't actually met him yet. He sent me flowers and said we were good friends." Another wave of Felecia's hand. Friends. Strange. Anyhoo! She did, though, take her hand of Faramir's knee; she wasn't entirely without tact. "Were you at the Winter Ball and I didn't see you?! NO! I would've made you dance with me," she teased.

"That sounds like Draco. The flowers and the surprise." I surprised Adam too with knowing him before but... well, I did.

"I was at the winter ball and I was wearing a modern suit, like so many other men. It was crowded so no worries about not having seen me." I did see him. "As for dancing with you, that would have been unlikely. I do not know how to dance to modern music."

I did not dance with anyone.

"My lady is a dancer at the opera house, so I really should learn. But she's from the the late nineteenth century so she doesn't do modern dance either." Next to Meg I'll be a big, clumsy oaf and I know it. I'm surefooted enough and can move silently as a ranger, but she truly knows dance.

"You have a lady?! Oh my! I'm jealous!" Which Felecia wasn't, but it was fun to tease. "Lucky bird! How long have you two been an item, mmm?"

I'm very close to making a remark about his not wanting a lady but I do not know him very well and do not wish to offend.

"Not quite a year. It was Draco who introduced us, actually." It comes back to him again. "He and Meg are friends and she was looking for introductions to men. More like what she'd be used to back home, very formal."

Likely strange to most people, I know.

"I'm not a modern person either and am more accustomed to taking things slowly. Also, if I do anything to make Meg upset I'm sure I'll hear from Draco about it." I'm sure I'm making a rather odd face. "It tends to make a man cautious when he's being watched."

Not exactly watched, but checked up on.

... all right. That was odd, but well, Felecia was growing used to oddity (and it took, for the record, a great deal to offend her). "A year! That's serious then. Do you love her, then?"

Not that Felecia was jealous of that. She didn't want love. She didn't. At all. Want that. Nope. Not at all.

I'm not sure how to answer that.

"I don't know. I do know that I need to speak with her and see if she feels anything. For all I know this is still formal for her." I don't think so, but I haven't even kissed her yet, more than her hand. Draco's not going to get upset with me for that. "I really need to know that it's more than me still being the man introduced to her. Modern women confuse me badly enough but their ways are different."

Things can be easier. Or faster.

"It's more like courting at home and I'm not allowed to do that. There's certainly a lot less permitted than in your time."

"... you aren't allowed to court? At all?"

A sudden, alarming thought occurred to Felecia, and of course if it occurred to her, it had to be asked, "... are you a virgin?"

Give her credit: she asked quietly at least.

"Not at home, no. It's not usual, but father decided it would be best if I did not court until my older brother was married and had an heir." It's not usual at all. "He never married, my brother."

And he's not going to, not in Middle-earth.

I shake my head.

"Oh no. That was taken care of years ago." Another face. "Unfortunately I didn't have time between my sixteenth birthday and when I had to join the rangers, so I had to wait an entire year until I got home."

It was a long year.

She could only imagine! Felecia patted his knee. "Well, I'm sure your girl here is very nice." Of course, she couldn't resist, stretching out her (gorgeous, ha) legs and crossing one over the other. "So. What're you up to today?"

"She is. The formality of the arrangement is just making things awkward." I consider. "It's not the strangest relationship I've had."

Glaurnaneth is that. Somehow, I keep meeting ladies.

"Today... it's an anniversary of a sort. Before I came to the village I was in a similar place. The third of January was my last day there." Sort of. My last day alive. "I'm grateful, as I like being here in the village much better."

"Do you." Leaning an elbow on a knee, Felecia rested his chin in his hand. "Why is that?"

It always surprises me when people do not see the good here. I know it must be so small and confined compared with what they're used to, but there is so much here.

"Well, I can work here and I like working in the library. There are always things to learn, and not just from books." I look at Adam. "People here are so different. You're human, but there wouldn't be anyone even a little bit like you at home. It's interesting to meet people and learn about their ways."

I shrug.

"Even if they are very different from my own customs and nothing I would wish for myself, it helps to learn. There are people I have met who seem very different, not at all like me, yet they have been good friends. All this, and I don't have to be a soldier here--except rarely." I'm good at it, but it's not my choice.

"Do you like it here?"

Were it most anyone else and Felecia would've given a flippant, blow-off answer with a wave of her hand. But Faramir seemed to inspire thoughtfulness, even in Felecia, so she tapped her cheek and finally said, "I suppose. It isn't as if I left a bustling life of adventure behind," she tittered. "But doesn't everyone invariably want ... more?"

"Well, I've surprised a few people I've met by being satisfied by what I have, or even considering that I might have been better with less." I know that needs explanation. "My older brother is father's heir and I've never been jealous of him for it. I never wanted what he had ( ... )
