22 - NEIGHBOR

Dree took a deep breath and moved over to the microphone. There really weren't enough people there to necessitate it, but it made things easier, she supposed.

After all... she really wasn't a yeller.

Her eyes moved over the crowd, taking in the smiles and laughter... life. After everything they had endured, these people were still smiling. Everyone kept telling her that is was because of her - that she had saved them - but Dree didn't really agree.

She stepped up, because no one else would, but that didn't make her the best person for the job.

Did it?

As the Celcians started to notice that Dree was standing, many of them stopped and turned, nudging others and pointing toward their newly-recrowned queen. At the sudden burst of undivided attention, Dree laughed nervously and took a step back. A second later, she shook her head and stepped back, trying to will herself past the butterflies.

"Um," she started, immediately regretting that her speech was going to go down in the annals of Celcia's history, starting on a pause. "Hi," she next said, giving them all a smile.

Yeah, this was going great.

Dree took another breath and started laughing.

'Stop laughing!' Dree told herself. Waving a hand in front of her face, Dree managed to hold her breath and closed her eyes. "Sorry," she said, her voice echoing across the grounds. "Okay," she continued, holding her hands up slightly, "serious face." Taking another breath, she nodded and looked at the crowd again.

She spoken to them as a group many times, without this kind of reaction, so why was she nervous now? Well, every other time they'd talked, they were in a meeting hall or a conference room. This was open, there was a microphone...

This one was official.

"Y'know... for the past few months... I've been dreading this moment. What do I say, how do I say it..." Dree smiled guiltily. "I've been making my family crazy, worrying about it." She took a slow breath.

"It's been hard... painful. We've lost more than anyone should." She quickly swallowed and glanced down as a Laethrilian dragonfly flew around just in front of her. When the small bug landed on the microphone, she smiled.

"And, I think... no one would have blamed up for just giving up. But," she smiled again, "we're Celcians. We don't know how to give up."
