86 Author's Choice: Return to me...
Laethriel was more than just a vacation getaway for the Brooks-Donovan family; it was Trey's homeworld and, while he'd left as soon as he could, it was more to get away from his father. Their relationship was rocky, at best, and Trey had inherited his father's stubborn streak. The house belonged to Trey - passed down to him on his mother's side - and, with the prime location on the bay, it was one of his favorite places in the universe. Dree had once asked why, after his mother died, Trey hadn't simply moved there, instead of leaving the planet altogether.

01 Vacation
Max loved living on the ship - granted, he really didn't know much else - but he always looked forward to the "trips" to the beach. Really, it was just a break for his parents, but, there was sand and water and bright colors and he got to sleep outside and look up at the stars. Daddy helped him put up a tent and Mommy El and Massey chased him through the sand and Mommy held him tight after it got dark, and they stuck the white smushy things into the fire. Sometimes, Doctor Chapel and Cap'n Goofy had dinner with them.

47 Pitching a tent
Dree was leaning against the porch beam, mug of hot tea in hand, and watching Trey and Max put together the tent. The weather was fairly warm, but when the headaches came on, she found a cup of tea to be the best remedy. Max turned, at one point, and waved enthusiastically. Dree gave him a wide smile and waved back before he took the peg Trey was holding up. As she took a sip of the tea - one of the stronger blends she preferred - Dree watched the sky in the distance. Offshore, a building storm was threatening their barbeque.

07 Sloth
Trey was manning the grill while Max played on the beach with El'Ari. Dree sat on the porch steps, still nursing her cup of tea, and watched with a smirk as Trey went about preparing their dinner. "You just gonna sit there and stare at my butt?"

Dree smiled and raised the mug to her lips. "Hell yes." Trey turned and made a face as Dree raised her eyebrows.

"Lazy, lazy... lazy," he scoffed.

Dree shrugged her shoulders and shifted to rest her legs across the step. "I think I'm due a break."

"Oh really?" Trey smirked.

Dree simply nodded.

35 Burn
Trey moved over to the porch and leaned against the boards, arms on either side of Dree. "And what have you done that's so grand you get a vacation?" Trey asked with a slight growl. Of course, he knew exactly what she'd done, which was the main reason they'd taken this trip. He hated every time she died in the line of duty and, while she knew he didn't like it - neither did El'Ari - he wouldn't call her on it. What he could do, though, was try and make her recovery as low-pressure as possible.

"You're burning the chicken."

72 A seashell
Dree closed her eyes as Trey leaned closer to kiss her. "Mmm," she said as he pulled away, "yum." She could taste the barbecue sauce on his lips and it was doing nothing more than make her hungry. Reaching up, Dree ran her finger along the side of Trey's leg, just at the knee, and smiled as the muscle twitched.

"You gonna tell me what's in that sauce?" Trey smiled and shook his head. "Well," Dree continued with a heavy sigh, "worth a try."

"Mommy!" Dree smiled again as Max ran up to them, holding up a shell. "Mommy, lookit!"

62 Hermit crab in his shell
Trey moved back and turned toward the grill as Max leaned against Dree and held the shell up. "Did you check it for a critter?" he heard Dree ask, before Max broke into a fit of giggles.

"No critter!" Max shrieked, still laughing as his mother tickled him. Trey picked up his beer from the grill stand and winked at El'Ari as she moved toward him. He passed the beer when she held out a hand and continued flipping the now-charred chicken.

"She looks better," El breathed, and Trey glanced over his shoulder to see Dree focused on Max.

Dree chewed her food slowly, listening to the dinner conversation and trying to slow her brain down. The weather was beautiful, the company was wonderful and she was trying to remember that this was a good thing. Raising her eyebrows, Dree glanced up at her name and nodded, not actually having heard the question. Honestly, she didn't even know if it had been a question. She didn't need to see the look El and Trey gave each other to know they had. Max had missed the exchange and groaned as his plate tipped and his potato fell in the sand.

73 Shooting star at dusk
Dree and Max were lying in the hammock and looking up at the sky. Trey had poked fun at her, earlier, when he had to help her into the thing - she really didn't like the hammock - but any excuse to have some time with her boy, Dree would suck it up. Usually, after lunch, they would get into the hammock and look up at the clouds. Max was pretty good at finding shapes, but it was a bit harder at night. El was teaching him all about the stars, and he knew the names of half of them, pronunciations aside.

03 Camp
"Mommy, you will sleep with me," Max said with a decisive nod.

"I will?" Dree asked. She glanced at the tent and pressed a kiss to his hair. "I think I'm too big to sleep in your tent, bud."

Max frowned slightly and turned to look up at her. "We can sleep here?" Dree smiled and pushed his hair off his face; he was probably due for a haircut.

"Then where would Daddy sleep?" she asked in a whisper.

"In the bed, with Mel," Max replied with a four-year-old-sized shrug.

"Then who will sleep in the tent?"
