Why does it always center around the bar?

This is the second time he's found himself in the place, this time standing outside and watching the wind ripple across the lake.

His father. His father It's too much to take with everything else he has to deal with. All he wants to do is help Molly.

She's the child he'll never have after all.

It's silent out here. For the most part...the wind makes a few odd branches rustle and there is the constant lap of water against the shore...but generally it's silent.

Silent.

Until--a shrill crying fills the air. A baby, wrapped in blankets is on the ground behind Matt, kicking his feet and waving his arms in the vain hope that someone will come and take care of him.

He shrieks, his cries tinny and frightened.

She laughs, incredulous at his raised hand. "Are you going to hit me, Matt? My sweet loving Matt, reducing himself to this? A man who hits women?"

His father takes a backhand to him, sending him spinning across the room-

Matt's hand falls, "I'm nothing like him."

His mother screams at his father to leave him the hell alone.

"Prove it," She whispers, stepping up to him and giving him a small smile. "Matt. Baby. Prove it."

He recoils, "What would you know about being a good anything Janice?"

[wifeofahero]

She hauls the baby up into her arms and bounces him lightly. "Well. I'm definitely a better parent than you."

[hearthethoughts]

Matt flinches, "I wouldn't know. I'm never going to have a kid of my own am I?"

He stares at the infant with a horribly sad look on his face, "What are you going to name him?"

She's still smiling that oddly creepy smile. "Matthew."

Matt's only response is to turn and stalk away down the hill completely heedless of the child and his ex-wife standing behind him.
