Of birthdays and height.

Today is Schmoopelina's 5th birthday. This is a big deal. You have no idea. Turning 18 or 21 is nothing compared to the excitement of turning five. Yesterday, while we were walking to the T on her way to her "school birthday" (for which she wore a tiara and a pin that said "My 5th Birthday!") she started talking about her future birthdays. There are kids that my sister teaches who think that she's younger than students because they're taller than she is.

Ah, the days when everything was as simple as "well, you're taller because you're older."

Age is a very nebulous concept when you're quite young. Later in the same conversation she told me that her dad is 80 years old and I had to chime in that I think she overestimated a bit.

Ha! At least she's realistic. When I was little I didn't realize that my dad (6'5") was particularly tall. That was just the proper size of a dad to me. Two of my uncles are taller. And I thought of my grandfathers (around 6'0") as being little old men-- rather short for adults.

She was kind of astonished when she met N, who is only 2" taller than me (making him a whopping 5'7") and remarked about how much taller her daddy is than my friend. Yes, your dad is very tall. I can't bear to tell her that tallness isn't something that you have any control over - she seems to be so proud of her dad for accomplishing such great height.

I remember the stark realisation I had when it was pointed out to me that you don't get taller with every birthday for the rest of your life. (Which, amazingly, corresponded with my growth spurt right around my 12th birthday in which I reached my adult height of 5'10")

Schmoopelina can accept that grown-ups are never going to get any taller. And that means much woe to those of us who are shorter than her daddy. Which is everyone.
