Homecoming.
224 words.
John stared intently at his computer screen, studying the article carefully, the glow cast upon his face the only light source in the room.
He read everything twice over, making sure not to miss a word. He couldn’t.
Is this for real?
He glanced at his alarm clock. 1:58 AM. The red numbers stood out like a siren, a stop sign, a warning. Don’t.
He glanced at his cell phone, sitting lifeless and quiet on his bedside table. He seemed to hesitate for a moment before reaching for it, ignoring whatever his clock was trying to convince him of, and scrolled down to the name that had been ricocheting off the walls of his mind for months.
Lege.
He listened to the ringing, four rings, five rings, six- I’ll wait until the eighth, ninth- before a groggy voice came over the line.
“Hello?”
“Stef?”
“...John?”
He took a deep breath. “Yea.”
There was a long pause, a pause that spoke of all the time missed between friends, all the time missed on the ice and in NHL arenas.
“Is it true?” He said, finally.
A sigh. “Yea.”
John let out a breath of relief. He raked his mind for something to say, but couldn’t think of anything that needed to be said.
He heard Stefan yawn and smiled. “Hey, Stefan?”
“Yea, John?”
“Welcome home.”

Welcome back, Stefan. I love you.
Drop a line.
