there's a book you might find interesting, If It's Purple, Someone's Gonna Die. it dissects color theory in film. one of the best ways to see color theory in action is to watch Edward Scissorhands on fast forward with the sound muted. the use of color to underscore character and overall tonality just screams at you.
The colors of Supernatural never cease to facinate me. This was an interesting research. Over all I just notice a lot of drab neutrals and drab greens. I always wonder why the boys don't mix it up more (and they'd look great in black, notice they barely wear it.
And shouldn't they wear the same clothes every season? It's only been a few years and I know I still wear the same clothes I wore in 2005 and 2006. :)
Yeah, there are tons of muted neutrals and drab olive-greens. The colors didn't pop out at me until someone sensitized me to them.
It's really interesting to watch the show just to check on the set dressing and wardrobe sometimes. Odd little things pop up time and again. Random bright yellow props lying around in Bobby's living room. Green granny-smith apples in Mary's WiaWSNB house, Bobby's dream-house, and in Little Red Riding Hood's living room, to name a few. And don't even get me started on the pigs in Season 3, much less the Celery of Doom. Someone in the art department is having all kinds of fun.
Thanks Makishef. :) Isn't it interesting? I've recently taken up reading Neil Gaiman's Sandman series because of the art direction on this show. I figure, if Eric Kripke is a fan, then he surely must be drawing from that tradition to inform the relationship between image and story.
Sandman is good. Though I'm not sure Kripke would throw in more than some random nods to that series, like Tessa the Reaper. But the "relationship between image and story"... now, that I can believe.
If you want a real trip down the line of things having been thought through, of pictures and words combined with intention and skill, I'd suggest reading V For Vendetta.
in watching the angelplayspeacock scene, in between all the "hey, you're not john constantine" and "ohh, i wonder if my landlord would freak if i did that to my walls" i also went "colour coding suggests the guy with the (superawesome) wings is to be trusted" and somehow totally missed the colour of ruby's shirt. now she's even more shadesofgrey then last season. remember how dean looked at her in norestforthewicked, and saw her true form. his little "buh?!" and subsequent covering with the ugly chick line could mean anything.
plus, the fact that i'm pretty sure she's been doing sam, which could be seen as pity, or manipulation. i'm confused. i think i need a venn diagram of hairstyles to re-calibrate my reality. *hint*
I'm glad to see you've still got your eyes open for the colours. :) Ruby's blue gingham caught my eye, too, but I was too distracted by the boys to really pay it much attention.
Considering how the season's shaping up, I can't wait to see how it will work out!
