Because we are given a gift, it is our obligation to use it. Do you think this is true, or is it possible to selfishly cheat fate?

I think it's how it should work. Given something free of charge, you should help others by using it.

What if you aren't sure you agree with the way your gift is intended to be used?

Benefit others with it, whether that was the original intent for it or not.

I can heal, apparently, but I can also throw fire. What does that say about my gift? I think it says that I can help or hurt, but, in the end, it's my choice.

You can use magic? From what little I know of that topic, isn't it normal to have a wide range of elemental attacks? To be able to both heal and use fire shouldn't come as odd.

Well, yes. But healing isn't an element.

Healing involves the repair of biological material, so its element would be 'organic.'

Even just between fire and healing, they don't work the same. Healing... It takes a lot more out of you. It's hard to explain, but you have to knit up the muscles like you're fixing clothing, but producing fire... It's more like drawing raw energy from your soul.
