[OTA, TAG CUDDY] Back to his REAL job

Sep 07, 2009 07:29

Chase had half an hour before his next surgery, a hysterectomy of a young woman who had been brought in last night following a car accident. Not only had the impact caused her to lose a baby, but she had too many internal injuries and now needed the operation. She wouldn't be able to have anymore kids. It sucked, and some days Chase just didn't ( Read more... )

Cuddy pushed purposefully through the heavy swinging doors of the Surgical department and swept up the corridor. Her eyes were searching out only one person, but she could still feel enquiring eyes on her as to why the Dean of Medicine would suddenly put in an appearance in their department. It usually only meant negative things such as her dumping new students in their midst, a lawsuit or inspection pending, or House was on the warpath. Technically is was the latter, because as far as she was concerned, Chase was just an extension of House, even if that didn't make her thinking amusing and naughty metaphors in her head. Hey, House didn't always have the monopoly on metaphors.

She found the Aussie surgeon at the Nurses' Station perusing a patient file and she didn't really have a way of sneaking up on anyone in these Jimmy Choos, so if he heard her coming, he didn't let on. "Dr Chase, I would like a word, please," she requested, leaving no room for argument in her tone.

Chase pressed his lips together momentarily, his head still lowered over the file he was reading. Bugger it. It didn't take a genius to figure out why she was here. Actually, it did. The genius, House, was why she was here, ironically. He knew by the way she looked at him when he left Diagnostics that he might get a friendly visit from the Dean of Medicine, sooner rather than later.

He looked up, closing the file over with a polite smile. "Dr Cuddy. How can I help you?" It was rather amusing how quickly the nurses and other staff dispersed from the station as Cuddy approached. No one wanted to accidentally get caught in any backlash.

Cuddy watched him analytically for a few moments. "I want to know what one of my surgeons is doing hanging around in a department he was fired from, with a boss who fired him, surprisingly conveniently to the time a differential was being run."

She waited for him to absorb the comment and then cleared his throat. "What is wrong with House?" It was a small stab in the dark, but her not so sound powers of deduction when it came to House told her that the older man may have told Chase something knowing Chase would sit on it if he decided he wanted to. Chase was a man for his own, and always had been, so there was probably something in it for him, but that was neither here nor there for her. Chase wasn't the one showing neurological symptoms that could kill a patient.

"He has better views from his office, and a whiteboard to draw naughty pictures on," Chase replied calmly, raising his eyebrow slightly at her. He leant his elbow on top of his file and turned to face her. "I don't know," he told her honestly with a shrug. It wasn't a lie. He really didn't know what was wrong with House, and it wasn't his job to find out, either.

George didn't have to feel like she was intruding since it was her Nurses' station Chase was standing at, looking all pensive. She came up beside him, her eyebrows raised. She felt like it had been a while since they'd been alone together, ever since that page from House. She was still pissed he'd left her high and dry for the cripple bastard, but she could be the bigger person. "You alright, Dr Chase?"

Chase looked up with a frown, wondering if Cuddy had come back for a second round, as if her final blow hadn't packed enough punch. He had been too caught up in his thoughts to pin the voice right away. "Nurse Morrison," he said, almost sounding surprised. "Are you in the next surgery in OR 4?"

George was a little taken aback by his expression at first, trying to work out if she'd done anything recently to piss him off. Nothing came to mind, and she relaxed a little when there was a slight change in his features. "Yes, is there a problem?"

"No," Chase said with a shake of his head and handed over the file to her to prepare the scrubs sheet. "It's going to be my last for an indefinite period. I've just been seconded to another position." He couldn't hide the growl at the end of his comment, that was bitten off like it had left a bad taste in his mouth. In fact, this whole thing left more than a bad taste, and in more than his mouth.
