I just read that you don't have to put two spaces after a period. That this was only supposed to be done on typewriters. What a bad habit I seem to have then. Anyone know if this is true? I'm too lazy to look in the MLA manual.

I was a lit. major, and I didn't know that. I always, always put two spaces after a period (at the end of a sentence). I just like the way it looks.

I like the way it looks also. I guess it has something to do with the fonts on computers are smarter then a typewriter.

"The only reason that two spaces were used after a period during the 'typewriter' age was because original typewriters had monospaced fonts -- the extra space was needed for the eye to pick up on the beginning of a new sentence. That need is negated w/proportional space type, hence [it is] the typographic standard."

Who knows, I don't think anyone has ever said anything about it. I know microsoft word says it's a mistake when you don't put in two spaces. *Shrugs*

I learned that from a guy in my last quarter of nursing school. Can't remember where he got the info from and I never really tried to verify it.

I have, however, already broken the habit of using 2 spaces. Aren't I special? :)

this blows my mind! all the typing i've ever done and all the grammatical errors, yet always i've been faithful to the two space rule. i have seen writers one-spacing it, just thought it was a printer specific thing.
