I was walking back to Hufflepuff last night, and I was about to turn into the hallway by the painting of Fingal the Fearless. I didn't see anyone, but I heard a clanking of armour, so I went around that corridor. Hopefully, I avoided questioning.

Perhaps they want to know everyone's family trees so that they can start arranging pureblooded marriages without everyone being too inbred.

How do surnames in India work? Are they regional?

The spelling can be regional (Patel vs Patil, for example), but they are linked to castes.
