"I guess there wouldn't be much of a show left if he didn't"
There should be; but there wouldn't be.
I'm tired of the current generation of writers having a strict reliance on:
London Cardiff Darleks Other places in England
Considering he's got all of time and space to cruise through; why would one ever consider visiting London or Wales? I want some sci-fi in my sci-fi. Is that too much to ask for?
I know what you mean. But to be fair though, throughout all his travels in time and space, the Doctor has very rarely met anyone from Earth who wasn't British.
The Doctor always has to make a Big Choice™, or at least some sort of Heart-Rending Sacrifice™. Don't forget, he's also a The One™ as well, like Neo and all the other The Ones out there.
I stopped watching Dr Who yonks ago, having become utterly nauseated by Russell T Grunt's endless mixing of the Book of Revelations with Eastenders. If it wasn't the End of Time, it was the End of the Universe, or the End of the Multiverse, or the End of Something Even Bigger and More Important that was always somehow solved by a combination of The Doctor and some Chav family or other. I love fantastic stories, but these repeating themes just smack of hamfistedness and a lzy, formulaic approach to story construction.
And David Tennant's wretched eyebrow... Don't get me started on that.
Seriously, I could fill a book with reasons why I no longer watch it, but I won't.
I'd just like to say that I totally feel your pain!

In that case you might be interested in giving the new series a go -- Russel T. Davis is no longer the head writer, that task having been passed to Stephen Moffat, who wrote some of the very best episodes during the RTD days. The last episode was a bit lame, but the two before it were pretty good and I'm hoping that the ridiculousness that Russel T. Davis gave to it will sort of gradually leak away over time.

Sorry. Just tilt your monitor a bit, that will make it all OK.
