It is a fun exercise, too. It works best if you can phrase a plotting problem precisely. Which is of course half the solution, already. :)

I am huge believer in coincidence as a source of creativity. :) I do this exercise in my creative writing classes, during the period when people have to plot. It's always astonishing how well it works.

What an interesting way to approach a problem! Your example is perfect (and I love your associations to the sentence fragment, so beautiful). Giving some thought to create more interesting and intriguing antagonists and conflicts is very wise advice too!

"hair the colour of autumn" is a great phrase to make associations. :) The exercise is great, really.
