Ouch! This story was brilliant, but agonising. I loved the way you brought it into line with the epilogue in the end. I really wanted Harry and Draco to end up together, but this was more in keeping with the prompt. Strength and survival above all things.

(Barely coherent here.)
Gosh, that was like all my Christmases and birthdays rolled into one -- in other words, All The Things I Like: Draco in dire straits, Draco working in a menial job, Draco fiercely proud *and* angry *and* snarky, (and despite circumstances) Draco landing squarely on both feet; plus buckets of hurt/comfort to top it all.

What a fantastic opening paragraph. It instantly gave me a warm, warm glow of anticipation:
I checked my wand. Fifteen spells left. Fuck. I had only fifteen spells to last the rest of the month. And Autumn had come early this year. Which meant I had to choose between casting Warming Charms on my room or using my monthly quota of magic to do the most onerous cleaning chores at The Daily Prophet.Their v final exchange broke my heart to bits. Wah, not-so-mysterious Author, I did not know you were capable of doing this to H/D ( ... )

Yeah, might as well have signed my name. Kink city, get 'em while they're hot! Glad you enjoyed. A story that was rumbling around for a couple of years waiting to be written. Glad to have the opportunity to write it for here. The prompt was perfect!

Wow. I loved your way of depicting what war does to people and the blurring of good or evil deeds on both sides. How history and its moral evaluation tends to be done by the victorious side. My compliments on the very accurate description of arthritic knees and the revolting injustice to know what would be good for you but you just don't have the means to afford it like Draco did. Loved your characterization of the minor characters as well (especially Ron, though unflattering, it was very canon I thought). Oh, and this was the best line I've read in a very long time:
“Dear Draco” in her beautiful, cultured script reminded me of who I was. That I was worth fighting for.
Thank you!

The portrayal of Ron made me feel slightly guilty because I really do like ron, but I wanted to have him be wounded as well. Perhaps not as manifest as Draco, but the scars are certainly as deep. And also, I needed someone who was very dear to Harry so that when he made his choice, Draco over Ron, he was making a choice that rocked Draco's soul. Can you imagine what that would do to Draco? So the choice had to be meaningful. So trashing of Ron was inevitable. Sigh. I have a soft spot for Narcissa.

I think I can see clearly enough to type now. I certainly wasn't expecting that ending, no matter how much sense it made. You were dead on your prompt, whoever you are. That Draco not only found the strength to persevere but also to be strong for Harry and then his Mother was perfect. Really, really enjoyed this!

Thank you. Turned out a bit longer than I had planned, but well worth the effort. I adore both these boys.
