If there's anything I've learned about academia over the years, it's that it loves to appear more hardcore than it is. They would certain write their student handbooks or whatever method they use to lay down the law to make it appear that they would never allow someone to switch thesis to non-thesis track or anything like that. But at the same time, these are people who are extremely used to back-biting snippets and behind the scenes alliances as the ways that things get done. Which means they typically tend to get very flustered when someone uses a highly forward, straight to the point approach with them. If they already kind of like you at all, and you can go into the office of the person that matters and tell them face to face what it is you need to happen to make this work (like switching to a non-thesis degree without losing your current credits), you might have a good chance of getting it to fly. Good luck.
