So far I've tried it in wraps, yogurt, and even chocolate pudding.

A great article, Protecting Ourselves from Food, argues that a taste for spices has evolved among people who needed them for their antimicrobial properties. In tropical climates, bacteria grow much more rapidly on meat, and the most popular spices in such places are also highly antimicrobial.

Also, they argue that morning sickness, more accurately referred to as nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), has evolved to protect embryos from teratogens and their mothers from food-borne microorganisms.
