I was reading what seemed to be an otherwise intelligent book, when something jarred me right out of it - the ignorance about confusion between Multiple Personality Disorder and Schizophrenia. No, no, they are not the same thing! No, stop annoying me by pretending they are! Look here or here if you don't get why the 'split mind' is not the multiple ( Read more... )

one thing that has always intrigued me about multiple personality disorders are that there no written accounts of the phenonmena by neurologists. ive always wondered how multiple personalites would physiologically manifest themselves within one individual

Really? There have been no scans, no physiological analyses done of those with MPD? Huh.

I think I read about a study recently that purported to have done scans on someone in different personality phases of MPD (or dissociative identity disorder as it's now apparently supposed to be called) ... don't really remember much except that it involved the amygdala, or possibly the hippocampus - something fundamental to memory, anyway.

Gee, that was vague ;)

Bless you for getting irritated about this - it's one I can't let lie, either.

Isn't that annoying? Schizophrenia comes in many flavors, much like ice cream, and MPD may take different shapes but it's basically the same thing. Don't people read anymore?

I don't think they do.
Or what they do read is also as uninformed.
Poor scientist dude who coined the the 'split mind' term had no idea the confusion it was gonna cause.

It's a mistake commonly made in the media, so I can see how easily it transmits to the population at large. But, GAH!!!

It's very frustrating when writers only read fiction for their research. Creates all sorts of annoying cliches.
