Wow. Using different kingdom cards at different tables, scoring on total victory points, and allowing at-the-table collusion like "let's agree not to buy witches" is just about the worst Dominion tournament format I can imagine. Was there a table with Gardens? If there was, and they just agreed "We won't end the game until the coppers and silvers run out", they would be pretty much guaranteed to place 1-2-3-4 in the tournament.
If you enjoy tournaments, as opposed to playing them because you like the prizes you hope to win, you should come to the World Boardgaming Championships. 9 days of tournaments, in 125 different games. No prizes other than plaques and glory.
For me, "playing against the best" and "winning the tournament" aren't the reason that WBC is my favorite gaming event. It's that any time I go to a WBC tournament in game X, I can walk in knowing that I'll have a chance to play game X, with the optimum number of players, with opponents who all at least know the rules of the game, and all of who really like game X and are really excited about playing it.
