You know, some episodes, I can really tell that Ron Moore was involved. Like the last two I've watched, which are Babylon and Pick a Number.

Spoilers for Babylon and Pick a Number )

Claymore as in the anime/manga? I've heard good things about it. I think it's on my list, um, somewhere. (Somewhere after Ergo Proxy, Gunslinger Girl s2, Darker than Black, and Alien Nine.)

Yep, that Claymore. So I should add the ones you just mentioned to my Netflix queue?

Clearly, my high school experiences with anime need to be expanded on. I could barely find anything but creepy hentai and harem shows then, because that's what the people who ran my local comic shop ordered. (Though I did pick up Devil Hunter Yohko and Vampire Princess Miyu, which VHS tapes I still own.) So I thought that those were pretty much all the anime tropes out there. Thank goodness I have friends who can rec other things!

Ergo Proxy: I'm half-way through. It's rather screwed up, but very good. Most people live in Domes, because the outside is a wasteland, and society in the Domes is rather socially stratified. Vincent Law is an immigrant, and Re-l Meyer is an intelligence agent and they're both caught up in this tangle of secrets surrounding the domes. I think you'd like Re-l. Also has Pino, world's most adorable little-girl robot ( ... )

All I can think is, "Sophie from Leverage and Michael from Ultraviolet are totally working undercover here." Because it would be the CRACKIEST crossover ever.

I'm really not shocked by this. For the most part, Ron Moore had a pretty good track record on Star Trek but BSG soured me on him SO much. No women survive? Many kill themselves? Every character of colour except Athena dies? Pretty much everyone portrayed as non-straight dies? That is just bad.

Now I'm even put off watching Carnivale, which I heard was a pretty good show. :(

The first four episodes were good, and portions of this episode were really good too. But the whole "killed so she could be repeatedly raped forever" was just. ARGH. TOTALLY FAILTASTIC. I'll let you know if that's just a deviation from the norm.

At least Carnivale has multiple female characters who show up in every episode? But, no, that doesn't excuse the fail of this episode.

Also, there are no characters of color in the main cast. Admittedly, dealing with them in the dust bowl and during the Great Depression would be tricky, but, let's face it, just because it's tricky subject matter doesn't mean it should be shied away from. The only characters of color I've seen thus far are the Chinese prostitutes in Brother Justin's plotline, and they've been incredibly minor characters.

IDK, I'm enjoying the show thus far, but I'm only six eps in. Here's to hoping the fail doesn't continue to show up.

No women survive?

Well all the human women died, but the men got to go live with their sexbots so it's all okay!

Geeze, even typing that makes me nauseous.

I count them as dying too because the Cylons who survived all died at least once on the show, including Ellen when she was believed to be human.

ISN'T IT AMAZING!?

Honestly? Jeckyll is TWELVE KINDS OF AWESOME. Trust me and push through the first 3 episodes with Claire. It is 100% worth it. DO NOT GIVE UP ON HER. Also, James Nesbitt is phenomenal and absolutely fearless. I'm also a huge fan of Michelle Ryan in this. This series is one of the reasons I was so disappointed with Bionic Woman. Ryan CAN pull it out and rock the damn house.

I LOVE MICHELLE RYAN.

I mostly didn't watch Bionic Woman. But she was Nimueh in series one of the new Merlin show, and she is awesome in it.

So I really didn't like BSG, just putting that out there, and neither did my pal Ali. And our other pal, Z, said, "But Ali, DS9 is your favorite Star Trek and RDM was all over DS9!" So since Ali was in the middle of a DS9 rewatch anyway, she decided to really pay attention to the eps where RDM was the writer.

Surprise! RDM was responsible for all the things in later DS9 that she didn't like, such as crazy excessive Klingon violence, etc. And I have to say, having seen a few of the eps that he wrote, that he did exactly the same looks-cool-but-pulls-all-its-punches plotting there as he did in BSG, which was one reason I didn't like the show.

So to hear that he was involved in Carnivale, a show that I did not watch because it seemed to me that despite its vaguely interesting if cliched set up it was probably not actually going to go anyplace interesting or resolve any of its conflicts or mysteries, is entirely unsurprisingAlso punishing women for their sexuality is EDGY. Also punishing women for their sexuality is EDGY. That way you get your sex and violence thrills while still being MORAL.

That's the thing. It's HBO! It's not as if they couldn't have given everyone sex and violence thrills without bothering with being MORAL. *sigh* Sex exists, and it's not bad.

But apparently this is too hard for some people to pick up on?
