[spn] Oh, misogyny and race issues. What fun!

Feb 22, 2008 13:32

musesfool just posted dear mr. kripke and crew letter (that contains heavy spoilers about s3 of Supernatural) regarding the skanky race and gender issues that the show is guilty of.

*sigh* Guess which show isn't on my forthcoming list of shows which are awesome to women? Skeevy race and gender issues are why I lost interest in Supernatural partway ( Read more... )

...you've seen the Women's Work vid, right? I'm betting you have.

I'm starting to think that vid is what made me stop watching this season. I've seen the first two episodes of S3 but I haven't been motivated to watch any of the rest of it. And it's not like this is a show I was taking really seriously or at all seriously in the first place.

The comment she makes about it - that she could've taken any number of shows, including non-genre shows like Law & Order or CSI - intrigues me, in a way. We do make violence so very pretty.

Was idly thinking the other day how movies and tv lie to us; how often do you see many physical cliches turn up in real life? The bar fight, etc. etc. etc. The reactions we're show as ordinary and everyday are anything but, IRL.

Yeah, Special Victims Unit is a fucking nightmarish parade of violated women. I couldn't take watching it even though I like Chris Meloni. Given the glut of the procedurals and how many of their victims are routinely female, it's no real wonder we all don't feel safe anywhere.

I'd love to see a montage of all the female victims on L&O in all these years.

Y'know, I still haven't gotten around to watching a scrap of SPN, and the discussion I see from people who love it? Really isn't helping much. At this point I have only the first disk of first season on my Netflix queue in order to see Gina in "Wendigo," and we'll see from there whether I want to bother.

Ehh. It never really caught me. Both male leads are pretty, but for me, it's like a constant diet of cotton candy: no substance and I get rill damn jittery.

Jensen I think could go farther than he's shown so far, acting-wise. Jared? Um. Maybe?

Well, Gina's awesome in Wendigo, and I have s1 since I picked it up on sale, so you can borrow it if you want.

Keen. It's actually just hit the top of my queue, but you're closer. ;-)

Did you ever see Strange Luck? It aired in 1995 and 3/4 of the cast was female. One was a shrink, one was a reporter and one was a waitress, and all three were awesome and smart and at least two of the three were snarky too, to boot. (I don't remember if Richter was or not.)

Female guest stars on the show weren't always well handled, but that's a little less offensive with three kick-butt female leads on a four-lead show. :-)

I loved Strange Luck, but, God, it's been forever since I've seen it! Thanks for reminding me of it.

Cool! So now I know when I make the SL fanvid I've been wanting to do, at least one person will watch it. ;-)

At least two. :-) I was bitter about that cancellation for a LONG time.

I gave it up about mid-second season as well, and I'm so glad I bailed when I did. Just reading the comments about how much worse it's gotten (from people who like it waaaay more than I ever did) have made me angry at the show. I'd be in a very bad place indeed if I was still investing my time in it.

Yeah, I'm just so dubious. I'll start watching again if I hear it's gotten any better, y'know?

while I spam your comments like a mad woman:

You have to admire a fandom that puts together an entire community of fic about boy-on-girl oral sex though. *g* (The Dean/Faith story here is a particular favorite of mine ;)

Oh, hell, keep comment-spamming. I get bored easily. ETA: As I forgot to say, wow, I'm going to have to check out that comm. And that story. When I'm not at work.
