The Vampire Diaries, tv show catch-up, RL is dumb, LJ, all kinds of things.

First of all, LJ's going to be down for a while. Today. From 7 - 9 PM EST. Which means that, while you're unable to access LJ, you can find me at Dreamwidth! And Twitter. And InsaneJournal. But mostly at Dreamwidth. (I have invite codes. You want one?) You don't even need a Dreamwidth account to comment; all you have to do is use your LJ ( Read more... )

Why on earth can't lj do their fix-it stuff in the ultra-early AM? So dumb.

And man, that really is one nasty nightmare. I'm reading The Passage, and it's made vampires scary again, which is excellent, at least so long as they stay out of my dreams.

Fringe rocks!

Ooh, who's the author? Is it urban fantasy or horror? Because I'm kind of bored by urban fantasy vampires these days, with their piles of angst and their search for their one true soulmate.

Er. I get snarky about UF, possibly because I loved the genre back before UF became synonymous with paranormal romance and I'm overwhelmed by the latter these days.

It's by Justin Cronin, the first of a trilogy, and it's big-bucks literary horror. The vamps are straight-on monsters, scary as shit. It's more like I Am Legend, the movie. It's very interesting, because it covers a huge amount of time and a big cast of characters, so it's not "OhmyGodI'montheedgeofmyseat!" reading, but it's fascinating and compelling, and in a nice change of pace, I really don't know where he's going even with this book, much less for two more.

I swear, I thought that was Kahlan from LotS with Edward, which was going to be the most entertaining crossover ever, if Edward had been confessed.

Hm. I may have to at least check this book out. Let's all hear it for the local library!

What state are they in again? Because a lot of the colonial South did have a more substantial Catholic population, even among the English. Puritans weren't the only ones who found it a bit inhospitable back home.

Also, I kinda figure the pronunciation of their last name has been Anglicized all to hell. Which happens quite a lot. I run into people (mostly through work) who pronounce their names in ways that make my brain, which had a grand total of one year of college Italian, hurt a LOT.

It's an assimilation thing, I think. There's a major Italian-American cultural community in this area, so things have held more strongly for your family than for someone who's spent a generation or three in an area that doesn't have that social support for the identity.

I might give all of this a little more credence the series hadn't shown Stefan making an Italian meal for Elena in season one, talking about his Italianness, and pronouncing "mozzarella" in a very Italian fashion.

There is that. Hey, I tried. ;-D

Stefan is trying to get back to his roots but not doing a very good job of it?

Jumping in here, and not watching the show AT ALL.

If the brothers came over with the Italian diaspora at the turn of the last century, then it would make sense for them to hold on to their Italian culture in a way that makes sense for descendants of that diaspora.

If they came over earlier (let's say pre-Civil War) then they would probably be 100% assimilated with very few traces of their Italian-ness. There wasn't a particularly strong Italian-American community in the US in the early 1800s and Italians were looked down on a LOT, so there were strong cultural reasons to bury one's heritage.

Oh, believe me, I know this one. From my family's oral history.

I HAVE THOUGHTS

I will type the bulk of them up later sob sleep needed /zombies

Also, Stefan, you idiot, you do not hurt your friends whose lives are potentially in danger by reminding them that you know how they can distract people because your brother mindraped them into doing it for months. Way to go, jerkface.

I could be wrong, but I think he was referring to the recent distraction shenanigans with Katherine? (also referenced by Elena.) Which is... also insensitive but in less enraging ways.

REALLY looking forward to hearing them!

Elena totally was thinking of that, but I distinctly remember seeing Caroline flinch when Stefan brought it up, so, whatever he was referencing, I think Caroline for sure had Damon in mind. Especially as that's who Stefan was most recently referencing.

I'm trying to get my thoughts in order wrt Bonnie and Caroline, because their utter lack of talking (except for the time they had to thanks to a crisis) is bugging the fuck out of me, given how close they were in season one.

Alex is not nearly as awesome as Annie, alas. Well, she was getting better in s. 2; I kind of still need to watch the end of s. 2 and s. 3. However, there is also Shaz, who is pretty awesome.
