30 Days of Writing Meme - Day 14

Jul 08, 2010 04:10

Hahaha, you thought I forgot! Well... ok, I did. But here it is before bed. See, I was too busy writing 1050 words on noir. That's a personally good number for a night of writing, at least on only one piece, ok? I'm proud.

14. How do you map out locations, if needed? Do you have any to show us?

Ummmmm. I definitely don't have any to show you. I don't usually map out locations on paper. I don't do straight fantasy, so I don't need to keep any personal geography straight. The most I've done is mapped out rooms - usually just a quick sloppy sketch on graph paper - if I had questions about movement within the room for some reason. At least since I've started writing seriously again that's been the way it is.

When I was younger I liked making random world maps. I don't even know where they are so I couldn't show you if I wanted to, and I don't, because it didn't take long after making them to think they sucked and to try drawing them all over again. I used to have this thing where every character had to have their home mapped out as well. I don't know why, I guess it was a strange way of trying to find who they were through their stuff. My head works the opposite really, who they are determines their stuff, it appears slowly and with meaning, otherwise it's blank furniture that doesn't matter beyond some basic level of consistency.
